Hi,

So I brought my car to the dealership today to have it checked out for any problems and because I was suspecting some kind of coolant leak (I had to keep refilling my coolant reservoir every week).. and apparently I have a leaky water pump

How hard is this to replace? Because the dealer quoted me at $525 I just wanted to know if this was something that could easily be done, and if anyone's actually ever done it.

Never really looking to see where the water pump is and whats in the way... A new one as a part is prolly about 70 bills US. For an oem replacement. Time wise, I will assume it is on the front of the engine. You would have to remove the fan, shrould, a belt, unbolt 8-10 bolts and voila. Clean surface, new gasket, reassemble. Yeah it might take you a few hours, and you might leak quite a bit of coolant, might wanna drain it first. But I would tackle it, for ****s and giggles!

 

It isn't a hard job. Buy a new water pump from adanced auto or a local auto parts store(make sure it has a good warrenty) and then either do it yourself, or take it to a shop either then a dealership.

 

well i got a couple friends that said they could help me do it.. so hopefully it won't be too bad, just don't wanna strip a bolt!

 

It's a CHEESECAKE job... like Jynx said, get one from discount auto

 

yea i just gove right into it and it took me about 3 hours...with the wrong tools...so youll do fiiiiine

If you try really hard, and have some tiny hands and arms, you can get the fan off, and change the waterpump without having to do anything else. While you are doing this, you may want to change the belt too....couldn't hurt. I have found ratcheting wrenches makes this job really easy.

 

I'm 5'8" and my hands are as small (or smaller) than a girl's. Don't get me wrong, I'm just another skinny asian guy, but I sometimes don't know whether it's a good thing or bad. At one point, it's pretty sad to have small hands for a guy. At another point, it's very useful especially on either working something small or small spaces.

So far...society makes fun of my small hands.

Water pumps are A ***** to diagnose, it took me and my dad hours to actually catch the ****er dripping.
I still didnt change mine, but I can tell you that it cost me 35.00 at Advance Autoparts.

 

Yeah, mine cost about $35.00 as well, and I do plan on getting the drive belts replaced.. and now i also have to replace the clutch master cyl. too still haven't had the time to get em done though..
