Belt tension

I have a quick question about belt tension.

When I bought my 96 240 the guy who sold it to me said he left the belts a little loose. Every time I shifted my belts screamed. I got under the car tightened the belts. No more screaming when I rev it in neutral but now I get a little squelch when I get around 4k to 4.5k rpm. When I hit 5k rpm in 4th it starts screams like crazy. I just shift into 5th and everything is fine.

I would just tighten a little more but everything feels real tight right now. If I tension the belts too much I could run into problems right?

As soon as it stops raining I'm going to check that out. Thanks!

You see thats what I love about this board, people are friendly and I never would have thought to check for missing bolts. It's very possible though. Alot was unwired and unhooked when I got the car.

Either way I'm going to get an extra set of belts to put in the trunk. Can't wait to shift without a squeal.

I'm pretty sure it's more like an adhesive than a lubricant.
