Where on the valve cover? if it's where the valve cover meets the block, then the seal there has gone bad, you'll have to take off the valve cover, buy another seal set for like $20 and put it on. Thats a relatively easy fix, I myself did it the first week I had the car. That can turn into a problem if you don't fix it.
With regards to the smell, it seems like a lot of 240's smell like gas, my old gf's did, and many I test drove did. Check your injectors, those are known for the seals leaking. If thats not it then check your fuel lines and fuel filter for leaks.
