Intakes EXPLAINED

Im tired of all these intake questions EVERY month. I swear I, along with many others, have replied to atleast three this month alone. SO here ya go. Feel free to put in your input. This would be a nice sticky

Before we start lets define some terminology:

CAI=Cold Air Intake. Filter sits outside of engine compartment near the bumper

WAI=Warm air intake (No I didnt make it up people actually call it that ) or short ram intake (SRI). Sits inside the engine compartment just like your stock airbox

CARB = California Air Resource Board. Basically its what Cali guys hate. A beurocracy that takes care of smog. If its CARB legal, it will pass smog in Cali and anywhere else.

*If you want to get Get the Injen Intake with or without the extension....

Im not saying Injen is bad but for 190-200 shipped its very high. The extention to make it a TRUE CAI runs you another 40-50.

*If you want to stay legal in Cali and look pretty, get the AEM short ram its about 150 shipped on ebay....

That was mine. I had a good experience with it. It did its job and sounded good plus it was CARB legal.

-The Injen and the AEM are the ONLY intakes legal in California. All others, ebay, custom, or otherwise are not legal and may give you some smog issues.

*Another route can be the pop charger

This replaces your airbox with a cone filter while still maintaining your stock piping. Price ranges aroung 100.

*If you want it too look semi pretty get ELCheapo Ebay intake pipe and K&N filter...

Some are CAI like this one and are in the 120-130 range on ebay...

The other is a short ram and can go for less than 50. Beware fitment might be an issue.

-For either of these "Ebay special" Intakes, replace the filter with a known brand IE K&N, Apexi, Etc.

*The next route you can take is custom. There are four ways you can approach this...
1. You can have an exhaust shop bend you a pipe to your needs...Need a pic for this one but its self-expanitory.

***The other three will require you to move your battery to your trunk

2. You can have a shop bend you a pipe with fittings and route it to the left side where the battery used to be...

3. You can use the Injen extension as the pipe...You will need to put holes and fittings for the hoses...

4. And finally you can go the ghetto way and make the intake out of your stock airbox

Heres the link with instructions and pics...

-As you can see, you will need to plug up the areas where the two hoses used to be, find a way to re-route the hose, or use a small filter (breather filter). The last pic has both filters in blue.

*If you just want the sound cut your airbox.
Just take out your resonator and cut the bottom half of your airbox. Will give you the sucking sound you seek.

Running ducting to the filter through your bumper isn't a bad idea since it channels colder air to the air filter (similar to a CAI). Those buddies of yours made the mistake of leaving the ducting there when it rains... or they dumped the air filter and put the pipe straight to the intake (dumb). You can put ducting to the air filter but you don't make it enclosed so that only air from the duct gets in... that's what a lot of Hondakids used to do and they sucked up water, pebbles, you name it.
That concludes my rambling. If you have suggestions for improvement or if I missed something, go ahead and post. BigV, if you want you can input your explanation of why CAI work or dont work, or whatever. Im not good with that technical stuff

NOW NO MORE INTAKE THREADS!

Great post man.
( I know you wanted to hear that! ) lol

I would also like to add. Many people tink that using a dryer hose or something like that, and routing it down to the botom of the bumper is a good idea. ITS NOT. QUIT DOING IT!
In the past month, i'vek nown 2 people who have blown their engines because they did that and sucked water up. One did it because he drove through a shallow puddle. The other was driving during a down pour (no puddle) and all the water added up.

Keep your intakes in the bay, where it is mostly dry. Injen also sells a thing that i like to call a "filter sock" it goes over the filter, it is water REPELENT (not PROOF) and it filters out even more crap, while maintaining all of the same HP and TQ gains.

A lot of the Ebay ones actually fit fine. It's the cheapo filter they give you that should be replaced with a real K&N at minimum.

CARB = California Air Resource Board.

The short ram custom "where the battery used to be" mod can get you a modified emissions ticket in CA... it's lame but it's happened a lot.

WAI. Never heard of it til you said it. I bet you made it up LOL j/p

Running ducting to the filter through your bumper isn't a bad idea since it channels colder air to the air filter (similar to a CAI). Those buddies of yours made the mistake of leaving the ducting there when it rains... or they dumped the air filter and put the pipe straight to the intake (dumb). Instead of that Injen sock thing, the AEM bypass valve is a lot better - keep your CAI on even when it rains. It's proven - my brother has it on his car and even in dogs&cats SoCal rainstorms he does fine even at WOT>

Excuse the bad structure it's 7am and I haven't slept yet.

I recently put in a K&N flter in the airbox to replace the old paper filter. Sounds nice.

You should really get into some circumfrence differences in the aem and the injen because i thought one was bigger than the other.

Also, I have removed my fan, so the little mount on the injen is completely useless unless there's a bracket like AEM.

ok ok i got a question adding to this post even though the last post was made in 05. why in tha He77 would you want to cut the air box and suck in hot 300* engine bay heat. why not take a peice of 3" pvc cut a hole in the side of the air box and the wheel well, were you dont get water, link the 2 with the 3" pvc, and you'll still get good sound and power even though it may only be 2-5 hp & tq like an intake. he77 lets add to it for 8 bucks go buy a can of adhesion promoter and some ceramic paint the color of your choice and ceramicoat you intake an all your intake componets keeping them cooler and geiving you lik 1-2 hp & tq.

go to the ford escort forums those guys are desprit for power and will do anything for it, tons of great ideas there.

well we are talking about away from the engine. the pvc should be ok. i did this on my little ford escort when i had it, its engine bay was way hoter than this 240's engine bay, your not touching the engine your just in the radiated heat so it should be ok.

the ceramic paint isnt as good as ceramicoating but it helps a little.
