A question...

The other day my dad and I were cleaning my 93 s13's engine and we heard this weird rattling noise. So we took it to a mechanic we are friends with and he says that it's the timing belt coming loose. He also said that it would probably be a pain to replace ourselves and labor from a mech would cost. So he said that I might just want to look into a new kA24DE engine b/c mine has almost 190k miles on it...So which one do you guys think would be better to do?

I would try this and see if it helps at all. More than likely its your upper timing chain guides that are rattling. Its a very common problem with the Ka24de. I know what your mechanic said, but I would try taking off the upper guides before making any decisions first. Its very easy to do.

Take off the valve cover and look near the cam gears. You should see 2 plates bolted to the head that guide the timing chain. Take these off and see if it helps the problem at all.

dont listen to that "mechanic", he said you have a timing belt. its most likely one of your upper guides. remove the top and top right guide and you should be fine unless the bottom guides went out. how loud is it? pssshhh..... 190k is nothin, ka's are indestructable lol.

yeah, your mechanic was in the ball park but in an extreamly vauge way. KA are almost famous for the timing chain guides "knocking". just pop your valve cover off and take them off, i think its a total of 4 bolts. 14mms i think, either that or your oil pressure isn't where it's supposed to be but i'd just take the guides off and take it from there, be the easiest and won't cost a thing.
