Question What socket size needed to crank engine

I installed a new distributor and am following the guide on setting the timing.

The instructions I have say to manually crank the engine with a wrench until you can see the timing mark on the belt line up with the 15 degree mark on the pulley, then set the rotor at the #1 cyl. mark.

What size socket/wrench will fit the head of the pullet/crank. Instead of a socket, is it better to get some kind of a pipe wrench or something for more leverage? I don't know how much force it's going to manually crank the engine over, but the pulley seems to have a pretty deeply concaved dish to it, so I'm not even sure how I'd get anything but a socket on there... I guess I'll just have to give my craftsman stuff a go and hope an extension gives me enough leverage.

Thanks,

-S.

just so you know if you didn't crank the engine or move anything after you removed the dist. you can just slide the new one right in.

just make sure that the rotor button (spinner) is in the same location as the old one was before the dist. was removed.

then you can start the engine and adjust the timing (if needed) without having to set the piston to tdc.

I had a spectacularly boneheaded day when I took the distributor out and didn't mark the position... and by the time I got back from the parts store with the right one (whole other story), I couldn't remember where it was.

The silver lining is that I'm learning a lot more about my car than I thought I would.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. So far the 240 community has been so much better than some of the others.
