engine won't crank

Yet another problem with my 91 240.

I ran into a no crank issue a few months ago so I replaced the battery knowing that the battery that was originally put into the car when I bought it was sketchy. It ran fine for 3-4 weeks and the brakes died, so I bought a booster/brake master cylinder off of EBay being fairly confident that it was 1 of the 2 causing the brakes to fail. So a friend gave me a hand and we replaced the booster and cylinder and now the brakes are working great but the engine won't crank. One problem down and another waiting for me at the finish line.. it's a great feeling... I love my 240

So anyways.. we boosted it and it started up without any fuss so we let it run for about 20-30 minutes to let the battery charge, at that point we stopped the engine and tried to start it but again.. no crank. So, at that point we were both scratching our heads trying to figure out what was wrong but we ended up cutting our losses and calling it a night.

My first thought was a ground problem but I'm still not sure.

Would anyone mind giving me some ideas on where to start looking?

TIA!

We unbolted the ground wire from the engine block and cleaned it off with some sandpaper and a copper brush and now it starts up like a champ

On to the next thing... haha

Thanks for your help though

i was going to say just hit the starter with a hammer haha, glad you figured it out and beat me to posting. i had a 91 MPV van that me and some buddies bought for 100 dollars just to jump off homemade ramps and such and it had that same problem for a while. we just kept hitting the starter with a rubber mallet and it would start right up

hitting it only works for so long. eventulay the brushes on the starter will be completly gone.

good to hear you got it running again.

so thats why it wotn start???

I had the same problem and it was embarrasing i had to open the hood, hit it with a crowbar then go n crank the key, n come back out until it worked.

I bought a new starter and it worked great, however I wired a external starter switch n it turned on while the engine was runing, it catched up n it desintegrated the starter. so I took the old one, opened it, lubed everything and cleaned n polish everything used good quality electrical cleaner n high speed high temp grease. it has worked fine for 5 months now.
