Serious Driving Tips
Serious Driving Tips
As the thread name implies, I am going to dispense some driving tips... as a free service to my brethren.
First things first: buy books. I know half of you are saying, "they don't make drifting books, though!" You're right. They don't. However, excellent grip books exist and will help you drift better. Here are some recommendations from my library: Speed Secrets: Professional Race Driving Techniques from Motorbooks/Ross Bentley, Speed Secrets 2: More Professional Race Driving Techniques from Motorbooks/Ross Bentley, Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Driving from Bentley Publishers and Secrets of Solo Racing from Loki Publishing Company. On my wish list (for books on how to be a better driver) is a single book, Inner Speed Secrets.
Second tip of the day: Practice. Get to know your car. Learn the sound of the engine at 3000rpm, and at 3100rpm... and know the difference. Get extremely in tune with the steering. Wear relatively thick gloves and get used to them. That way, when you go back to driving with racing gloves or your bare hands, your sensitivity will be greatly increased. Any increased sensitivity will allow you to know what's going on with the car at any given time.
Third tip of the day: The transition from brakes to gas should be as smooth as is possible. One should not even be able to feel it. Smoothness upsets the car very little, if at all. A stable car is a fast car. Be smooth.
I'll update my tips periodically. Feel free to distribute tips or ask questions. Thanks.
