newbie here... need some help

hey guys.
so far this site has been awesome!

i'm in need of help.
i currently wrecked my 03 celi gt-s
so now i am going for my project i always wanted to start.
i'm looking to start a 240sx/silvia project.
i was thinking of getting an sr20det engine/tranny/complete harness/ecu etc and building it up at home/school ( i attend an automotive college and am studying high performance). but i read some threads about the rb20/rb25 engines.
agian, i will be compltely re-building the engine and working on the transmission too.
what engine is the best to get as far as an sr20 goes? i've looked on ebay, and have found some s13,s14 engines ,black top, red top, etc
what do you guys think i should get?
it sounds to me like there are more aftermarket products readily available for the sr20det engines because of its popularity.
and so the prices of these parts will be less expensive than the rb20/rb25 you think?

after i build the engine, i am looking to get a body/car for it and swapping the engine/tranny/ecu/wiring harness in it.
do you guys know if i can buy complete harnesses?
and i will hopefully get a silvia conversion done and get it nice looking. what year should i get? i like the fastbacks but i like the s15 headlights .

well this will be my project and i'm looking to buy an engine/tranny/ecu/harness ASAP!!!!!!!!!
because i need a cylinder within 2 weeks for class.
like i said, i'm a newbie, so any input would be great.

thanks in advance

first off welcome to the forumsglad you like the site. I will try and answer most of your questions.

-There really isnt the "best" SR to go for, S13 SRs are probably the best because they are cheap and you can upgrade them easily to match up to a S15 or a S14 SR.
-A sr usually costs 2500-3500 and thats only 205-215HP. a rb20 costs 2000 and puts out 215HP. A rb25 costs 3500 and puts out 250hp! The only bad thing about the RB25 is the aftermarket isnt as big as the SR, but its still pretty easy to find parts.
-You can buy a complete harness, but i would suggest getting a front clip so you get everything you need to install the engine in.
-As for the model you want...get what you can afford man. S13s/180s are cheap and you can easily put a S15 front conversion on that, but S15 conversions can easily cost 4k-6k with paint and fitment

Hope i put somethings in perspective, and helped ya out. Enjoy your stay here

thanks alot hyjynx!
i appreciate it.
i guess i'll be looking at the s13 sr20det then.
where's the best place to get internal sr20det parts for the best price?
also, do you know where i could get the harness?
the ones i saw on ebay for the front clip says the harness is cut at the firewall, so i would like to get a new complete harness if possible.

phase2motortrend.com has some harnesses, i think srswap.com does too. why dont you just get a front clip to get a complete swap?? Its a lil more expensive but its fully complete. Phase2 also has some internals for the SR. They are a great company to buy from, lots of stuff also.

Element, if you are plaining on rebuilding an SR, why not rebuild the KA? Just a thought.

Hey element, check my little list of companies that sell clips/motor sets

-jspecautosports.com
-night7racing.com
