ECM 240sx (need Help)

Hey guys. I'm new to this board. My 97 240sx SE just broke down on me...the ECM needs to be replaced according to the dealer, which will cost $1000. This happened to me May of 03 and now again, and it's no longer under the 12 months warranty. Both happened on a rainy day.

I have several questions to you experts here
Well...I know nothing about cars so bare with me (your help is very much appreciated).

Well, I'm very suspicious with the dealership, could they fix this problem with a cheaper alternative way?

Second, is there a place I can get the ECM for a cheaper price if I do need to get it replaced?

and lastly, what are my options with ECM? Do I have to get the factory stock ones?

My aim is "copulate". Please IM me and let me know or just reply here.
Once again, I thank you very much for helping me.

p.s. whats the difference between ECM and ECU?

i went to a website with some info on ecms and it seems like its the same as the ecu (just different term for it....I MAY BE COMPLETELY WRONG THOU)

if it really is the ecu you could probably buy a used one off some guy who swapped his ka for really cheap...and just replace it ureself...

The only problem with getting a used ecu is finding the RIGHT ecu. I own a 91 240sx, a dohc model. Someone tried to steal my car i think and toasted the ecu... again i think. The car ran like crap, the headlights wont go down, the dash lights stay on, and the brake lights stay on all the time, even with the car off... needless to say i needed to hunt down an ecu. I use ebay for everything, so i started there. After searching i found that ecus from the same years didnt all hve the same ecu. There is a 2 digit code on there, such as 3C, or 10, or as in my case, 24. You must get an identical ecu. Mine is coming in soon, so i hope that was the problem. Good luck
