My Finished, Over-The-Winter Project
My Finished, Over-The-Winter Project
Finally got her done about... well like a month and a half ago, just a little sluggish on getting around to show it off.
Its the usual suspect, was an automatic '90 (S13 obviously...) with many trips around the world on it (175k when purchased, almost 177k now).
I purchased an S13 BlackTop SR clip from Rims and Things (a '98 with 54k miles) (an eBay company, great service and support, crappy shipping....) and it came with a busted oil pan in which they replaced no charge, no questions asked (upper and lower pans).
The goodies on it were Splitfire coilpacks (only the packs and one harness
), an HKS actuator, a stainless steel flange for a downpipe, HKS Iridium plugs, a Juran water block with a coolant sensor on it, but no gauges (I believe they were Defi
), and I'm not sure of the internals, but the cams are stock so chances are its stock.

Pictures before she came home...

Picture after paint and the swap.

So how many of these have you seen? 10, 20?

The sock as since been replace with a breather filter....

For 250 bucks, that SS Autochrome FMIC kit kicks ***! It only needed small extensions because the pipes did not extend high enough to reach the engine bay to cleanly fit what I had set up. (No name aluminum hotpipe, and their cold pipe which slightly rubs the hood). I also went cheap with their downpipe which the turbo-side flange had to be rotated to line up, but for the money its all worth it! Everything is very nice polished stainless steel and the welds are very good as well (take it from my father, a welder for 44 years now)

I tell you, polyurethane exhaust hangers are the ****, but they're a chore to get on!

These RedTops kick ***, my system hits harder and the lights don't dim as much. The RedTop is generally a starting battery but is only lacking the time a YellowTop can go without a charge under load.

Got a little bored, so I decided to spice up the interior some. I painted what you see there, plus the gauge cluster bezel and the rings in the seats. The gauges are Megan Racing and work very nicely! Theyre tricky to read in bright sunlight but they are readable and they have an auto dimming feature for those night runs.

Things I do when I'm bored....

You have an SR too.... lol, besides rice is defined as a clamp on fart can and WalMart air filter then saying its crazy fast. The only thing keeping me from that is I have a whole exhaust....

Yeah it's definately going to be dropped on some coilovers sometime in the future. I just purchased some Hyperflex bushings from a NICO member and they're gonna go in over this week I think (It's gonna be a smokey job, seeing that I don't have a press to take the old bushings out....) Don't like the red inside eh? I figured it would just set it apart from other 240's (not that there are many in my area) and give it some life inside, but each to their own.
Yeah, I did ponder the thought of the KAE built up but I don't know about reliability, even though built right anything is very reliable. I figured the SR was designed with turbocharging in mind (hence a factory turbo) and will last longer as this is my daily driver.
Also, I figured that even if I had a badass KA-T, I would guess little things would always be going wrong and at 16, I don't have a wallet for anything else than this (even though this money could have built a BAD *** KA-T).
Another excuse for me to list, I was looking for something of a little challenge. I had just enough to get this finished (minus all of my time spent) and on the road for a first car and I wanted it to be something people around here don't see every day. Most people see a different engine and say "woah, you did that?" Even though its different, I still understand a KA with a turbo, or even a well built all motor KA would still eat this for breakfast.
I mainly did it for the challenge, I've always tinkered with machines and cars but never anthing as crazy as changing an engine in a computerized car.
Thanks for the compliments, and anyone can have that KA24E for 100 bucks if you want it, as it would be better off being used, than sitting in a shed!

You got a hotpipe with yours?! WTF! Ah well for the price you can't beat 'em. Its a great kit for the money, I mean if you pay 250 or whatever and don't expect there to be any problems, you've got problems. I just had to extend both elbows goinng up into the engine bay to minimize cutting or having to buy elbowed silicone couplers. And my cold pipe rubs my hood slightly, but my car doesnt exactly have a clean history (as I have seen from a different windsheild and some body lines way off) so that doesn't help out. I just don't know whether or not I want to get a carfax and face the truth.
And again, thanks for the compliment coming from the guy who I see as a perfectionist....

You shouldn't speak so soon, jacka**. Thats the one thing that pisses me off, when people jump to conclusions, especially on a sensitive topic as this. I was cut off, and I couldn't do anything else other than go into the median, where another person was coming head on towards me. I didn't want to hit them, and instinctively kept on going as I couldn't go back because that blind-a** driver was still there. So I hit a freightliner. Oh and this was in the worst spot of the road, where the water sheds over the road so worn Potenzas at that point don't do much. This was a right place, wrong time situation, nothing could have been done, unless I could see into the future, then I would have let that guy crunch my fender and door.
I've been driving since I was 8, field trucks, and the name implies an ATV that I have, which I race, so I understand the physics behind this stuff.
Next time ask before you jump to a conclusion, ok?
Oh and just to add to this, my next project is an RB26 S13, which I'm starting as soon as I find a car and sell my SR.
