a good wheel size?

i tried searching, but couldn't find an answer to my question.

the car will be a 97 240sx

i'm not really sure what to go with in terms of wheel size.
i've got a few wheels i'm trying to decide between but the actual size is what i'm having a problem with.

i've never been one to get much bigget than a 17in simply because i want them to be as functional as they are nice looking. in the past, i've gotten 17's for show/everyday, 16's for racing/track and hell, even 15in for snow.
i just don't want anything thats going to be a problem in everyday function. i don't want to loose any power due to ungodly size, and i don't want to have to grab larger breaks then necessary just to stop.

should i just go with a 17in like always, so as to keep a good ratio between looks and performance, or should i make the jump and get larger 18/19 in? do larger wheels work better on nissan than honda? is there even enough clearence for an 18/19 inch wheel under the front or back wheel-well?

also, as anyone knows, it's always good to grab a set of rims with the right offset, but should i wait untill after i get new brakes to buy the rims, or will pretty much any wheel clear a set of aftermarket breaks on a 240? (might sound like a stupid question to you guys, but it's just somehitng i want to know before i fork out the cash)

thanks guys, i hope the questions came out as coherent as they sounded in my head

Oh yeah about your brake upgrade question. If you upgrade to say Z32 brakes, then the offset isn't really a factor. The spoke clearance is what you need to worry about. So unless they fit a Z32 or you make measurements with the wheel and the caliper you'll just have to hope it'll clear.
