Im replacing my rear break pads and I can not seem to compress the calaper at all, I know that they adjust when the breakpads begin to wear down but how do you get it to compress for the new ones?

 

try to rotate them clockwise if that don't work their shot!

 

Rotate what? Its almost as if the parking break is on or something but its not, there has to be something mechanicaly holding it. Any other ideas?

 

hey. i had this prob when i changed my break pads last time. It toook 3 guys, and there's a tool you need to compress the piston (tho we managed through sheer brute force to do it w/o- go get the tool @ o'rielly's) but you have to rotate clockwise & push like nothing... even when you're sure you've got the bleeder valves open. that's how we did it.

 

Yea i have the tool its just really really tough
But you guys just used force and it worked?

 

n/m I dont have the tool, I think I see how it works now though, I have the tool that you rotate and it compresses it, but teh back calipers you need a tool that actually roatates the the cylinder, Am I right, do i need to go get this or what did you guys do?

 

you've got the right tool, but if you didn't properly compress the piston before you took it off, then yeah. it's just /lots/ of force. when you turn/push it in.

 

I have that caliper tool, and it definitly helps out more than anything in the world. But u do have to push like theres no tomorrow on the pistons (happened to me a couple times already) but I was able to do it myself... jus gotta be able to turn the tool (with a ratchet and a short extension) and press down on the piston at the same time.

There are times where all u need to do is baby it in (i.e. turn the piston a few times before pressing it down) and it'll work. But mainly, line up the tool on top of the piston, press firmly and turn the ratchet. Should work, but if all fails... open the bleeder screw, pick up the old brake pad, find a BIG C-clamp and press the piston down with the C-clamp (using the old brake pad as a protective guard on the piston).

Thanks guys, I went and bought this square thing with notches sticking out that latch on to the caliper and you just rotate it clockwise and it goes back into place... LOL i spent an hour and a half trying to figure out how to compress the thing cause the C-Clamp didnt work, but thanks for the help guys, my new brakes feel good and don't squeek..HAHA

Mac tools makes a nice setup for rear brakes with the parking brake incorporated in the caliper.

 

Mac tools??? mac makes breaks??? O_O'...
