Steering U-joint...number of splines on the shaft?

Here's my problem, the downpipe rubs on the steering u-joint. Instead of rebuilding the downpipe I'd love to just get a smaller/stronger u-joint and be done with it. Only problem is I don't know how many splines are on the steering shaft. Anyone know how I could find this out? The car is currently being worked on at a bodyshop so I have very limited access to it.

i would rather heat up the down pipe with a torch and hammer a dent in it to make room

A buddy of mine had a spare U-joint laying around and I counted about 35 splines, but there is a nice space cut out so I still don't know the exact number.

I'll probably end up beating up my downpipe if I can't find a new u-joint.
