What is wheel hop?

It may seem like a stupid or really basic question, but I'm wondering what exactly this term refers to (wheel hop).

I don't own a 240SX yet. (But I have plans, oh yes). So I haven't had a chance to experience this phenomenon firsthand -

- unless this is what happened in my old Nissan 4x2 truck. Kind of a chattering, barking sound coming from the rear (tires, I assume) when I "launched" from a standing start. (If the term "launch" can apply to a P/U truck, that is).

So I was hoping someone might have a technical definition for "wheel hop". I assume wheel unsprung weight has some effect on it. How does spring rate affect "wheel hop", and what role does the "sprung weight" (mass supported by the springs collectively) play?

Thanks,

Mitch

thats wheel hop and it sucks. You are kinda caught between traction and no traction.
