Winter tires or all seasons?

Winter tires or all seasons?
I will be needing new rear tires for my '95 240 this upcoming winter (within about month-and-a-half to two months) because my rear tires are nearing baldness; but my front tires are practically new. The front tires are all-season tires (albeit, fairly agressive-looking ones).
I need to decide whether I should get two winter tires or two all season tires. If I get winter tires, I will need to buy another two for spring. If not, then I'll have a set of tires to last me for a while. I should explain that we have heavy snow for 5 to 6 months of the year where I live.
Would it be a waste to get winter tires only for the rear if the front tires are all-seasons?
As long as I keep it out of the power-band and am not an idiot around the corners in slippery conditions, are all-seasons adequate?

Well, after some more research, I think this is what I'm going to do...
I'm going to buy two all season tires for the back, because they need replacing. The front all-season tires are basically new. If I find that I just don't have enough all-around traction, I'll go out and buy four winter tires. I'm not getting winter tires only for the rear because I've read in many places that a substantial difference in traction between the front and rear can cause big problems, which does make sense.
