just more questions
i know everyone wants to turbo their car, and i do too. I've been reading on here that the garret turbos are best for a KA. Theres a 2.2 or 2.0 4 cylinder SOHC engine at a junkyard with a garett on it. I belive its a old sunbird engine (i know its an american make engine...i just forget who), but it has a wastegate on it.....is this worth looking into at all? I'll try to get some pictures of it monday or find some on cardomain. I just dont know how easy it is to put on turbos with internal wastegates. Thanks for any help.
ok, i went and did a little bit more research. Its a 89-92ish sunbird GT turbo engine. Its a 2.0 SOHC 4 cylinder. I couldnt find a picture because cardomain is down and theres none on ebay, i also couldnt find the turbos designation...but maybe now someone will know a little bit. Thanks again
i have helped many people put together turbo kits for hondas. the turbo itself is perhaps one of the easiest parts of the kit. you need much more than just a turbo. any random turbo is not a bolt on. you need to get many other parts first. i would say that the most difficult part to find is a QUALITY manifold. the manifold will be flanged for a certain turbo and you can find turbos based on that manifold. ford thunderbird turbos are flanged for a t3 manifold. mitsubishi eclipse turbos a 14b or t-25. you should do some more research before you start this project. i wish you luck!!!
if i am not mistaken that is a t 3 turbo. and a tiny one at that. you might find that that is the last place where you should cut corners. buy a manifold first. find out what your choices are and post another thread then.
thanx for the help, since you seem to have a bit of knowledge on the 240 (more than me obivously) could you suggest a manifold/turbo combonation? I know theres threads on this but i would rather have someone with experience for sure recommend one. I dont have a huge amount of money, and i'm looking for a quick spool and a moderate amount of boost. I would rather buy a used turbo since i cant afford a new one at all. sorry for the inconvienience and thanx for the help.
i appreciate your confidence, but my knowledge is of turbos not 240's. I have very little knowledge of 240s. for an engine the size of a 240 you could use the same turbo that is on an sr20 which i believe is a t-25. a slightly larger turbo is the stock turbo on a 1st generation mitsubishi eclipse/talon/laser turbo and that is a 14 B. I ran 12.8 @ 107mph in my 1992 eclipse gsx with a stock turbo. the stock turbo on the second gen eclipses is a t-25. it is smaller, but both should be easy to find used. i sold my stock turbo for $100. it is not difficult to find one for the same price. i would check ebay or something like that for a cheap manifold and see what it is flanged for and then go from there. the eclipse t-25 is a good choice because it is the sr20 turbo, but smaller turbos kinda "run out of breath" on the top end. meaning that your lower end to midrange power is good, but it kinda dies out up top because it doesn't flow enough air. if i were you i would try to contact hyjynx because he seems to have the most knowledge of people on this sight. he is also putting together a FAQ page that should have a wealth of information that he could share with you. if you find a manifold, let me know what it is and then i might be able to suggest a turbo. GOOD LUCK!
a good turbo for the 240 is the T3 off of a z31 300zx. its years 84-87. The smaller turbos 14b, and T25 would actually choke the KA because of the extra displacement. they are made for 2.0 litre engines and stock turbos are usually designed to be at the lower end of the optimal side for the engine they are put on.
JGS makes a manifold that you could use, I have that on my car. its a log style, where you place the flange yourself, great for the junkyard turbo which you are going for.

I have the z31 turbo on my car ... it spools to 7psi by 2500rpm not too shabby and it stays all the way through the powerband. its a good sized turbo for the KA.

Thanx for all the replys, its really helping out. How much was it for your manifold? (i went to the site and they want me to call, but i'll save that untill i get a rough estimate). How exactly do you make the flange? Are the z31 300zx's hard to find at all? (if you know of one i can get the turbo from it would be a huge help, not many scrap yards here).about the intake, is there a turbo intake manifold too? (i noticed for a few cars there are different intake manifolds) I tried searching but all i found was $3,000 kits. And lastly, do you need to run an intercooler with that turbo setup? If so what kind of piping should i use? Thanks for the help, i know its alot of questions but i would much rather know what to use before i buy anything, that way its a quality setup.
no need for intake manifold do you know someone who is a really good welder? if so you can make an exhaust mani. and yes intercooler is very important to cool the air the turbo heats up with friction-air passing through the piping and through the turbo itself--.otherwise you get nasty detonation which leads to blown motor. flanges you will have to weld on i am assuming if those dont come with one or if they do that there when you order it for which turbo you run..
does that help?
does that help?
just run a sidemount, you dont have to but its a good precaution against blowing your motor, and not too hard to install, and relatively cheap.
the manifold was 263.99, and then welding the flange on was extra, depending on where you get it done, the price will vary a lot. all the parts come with it when you buy, you just have to do a little welding.
the z31 turbo isnt too hard to find, I got mine for 150 shipped on ebay in perfect condition, not new, but works well.
or go to www.car-parts.com they have a listing of a lot of scrapyards and you can search.

this is awsome, i finnaly have a good starting point. But of course, more questions lol. My school auto program (which i'm in) also has a machine shop, so i'm sure the teacher can weld the flange, so i'll use that manifold, along with the Z31 turbo. So the last major peice is the intercooler correct? I've read here lots of people seem to be using volvo intercoolers. Would that be large enough for this setup? About the sidemount intercooler, how exactly do you place it in there? (any pics?) Last question (for today) is with this setup i wont have to relocate any large systems like power steering or a/c? because i was looking at turbo setups on 240's at cardomain and i read several kids needed to relocate their power steering pumps. Thanks for all the help guys, already i'm farther along with my setup than i was after 5 weeks of looking on my own, thanks!
sweet, thans a lot for the piks, helps out alot, looks like that intercooler was made to fit...what kind of car is it from? And is that PVC pipe? would you reccomend that or having some metal tubes made? thanks, if you have anymore pictures i'd like to see em.
believe it or not pvc pipe is incredible. just remember to put some jb weld on the connectors or something like that to hold boost. kinda ghetto but works the nuts on a custom kit. i helped a civic hatch with a turbo gsr motor do the same thing with a starion fmic. we modified it to have bigger inlets. (stock is less than 2" on a starion) and all piping was pvc except off the turbo and intake manifold. KIKASS ftrs13
