Just purchased 180sx, couple of ?'s

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to the import and Nissan thing. I know a little bit about the KA motor, but almost nothing about the SR20DET motor. I am pretty mechanically inclined, so I can hang in almost every conversation started about mechanics. However, I have recently been stationed in Okinawa and I just bought a S13 180SX. It's very clean, with relatively low KM's. The body is clean and straight and it has a body kit and rims. The car is not lowered yet, but that is not my area of concern. I was just wondering about the motor itself. Right now, it is stock, except for turbo timer and BOV. I was wondering what the hp threshold is for the motor without having to rebuild it. I saw that the stock turbo is good for about 14 psi, but what is the stock setting? Also, what electronic boost controllers would you all recommend? I can easily find parts for this car here, without importing them from the states. So availability of parts is not an issue. I anyone has any questions, suggestions, or concerns, feel free to post them up. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy my stay in the Nissan world. My first car was a 1989 rx-7, this car is not much different in the aspects of handling and looks.

I would be more afraid of the fc than a 180sx. Ripping open a rotary would not me my cup of tea. In fact, I look in a fc/fd engine bay and just get plain depressed by the mess/disorganization. If you are so mechanically inclined, you should go to your local bookstore and buy a book all of the sr20det.

I wasn't trying to brag about being mechanically inclined. I was just saying that I would be able to follow the convo if it got pretty technical. Also, it is awfully hard to find any book in english over here, so the manual will be almost impossible to find. I did find a PDF format manual for the 180 on the web, so I'll probably just download that and print it out. I was looking for any guidance of suggestions from anybody about this car.

As far as driving a Skyline or something, I decided not to buy one because practically everyone has one out here. I wanted to go with something a little bit different. Sure, there are a few running around here, but not nearly as much as the Skylines. Skylines are like Civics out here.

As far as getting more air into the motor. That is first on the list. Intake, FMIC are the first things on the list. After that, higher capacity injectors and fuel pump, then comes the higher boost. Anyone, thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming. The car already had 3" exhaust from the turbo back.

Also, if anyone wants me to go scrounging around the junkyards here for parts, shoot me a pm or e-mail.

he's not joking about the skylines, i moved from oki in december, they're f'ing everywhere, i've seen skyline gt-s's for just over a grand on plenty of occasions, a nice 180sx was a sight for skyline sore eyes, if i had a choice i'd get a silvia k's though...(didn't have the money for one), i had a 91 prelude(lame, but got it for 300) but i drifted and raced the crap out of it! damn i miss ajah.. oooh and courtney drift(forgot the japanese name) very sweet man. well first of all stay clear of ajah(hope you know its off limits for mil)
ok onto the engine, just go with the basics first, cold air intake is a must!!, aftermarket spark wires+plugs, then get yourself a boost regulator, crank it up a bit(wouldn't quite go to 14psi with the ceramic t25), get bigger injectors(more fuel for the more air being supplied by the turbo), get ecu tuned for the bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, hmm, underdrive pulley system.. well thats basic stuff, i really dont know all that much. but really man just ask around, theirs plenty of guys over there that know an insane amount about the sr, not sure if your a marine but allot of the typhoon motors guys are racers, look in the Island Market classifieds, real great deals in there+you can talk to the guy your buying the parts from, good luck man, make sure you race it!! haha i wrecked 2 cars and insurance is cheap so go all out but dont get caught!! oh yeah, just tell the guys at the auto stores or shop what you basically want and what car you have and they are really helpful
and on another side note, make sure you get out and have fun on okinowa, most idiots go over there and stay on base the entire time and say they hate it. i love it there, best way to have fun and see the island is with these crazy people http://members.tripod.com/okinawahash__10/ tell them ricochet rabbit sent you(i was a pretty major member)

when i had my stock turbo on my car i ran 14psi i had greddy intake mani, z32 MAF, 3" down pipe and exhaust with no cat, front mount, basic bolt ons....put 265hp and 225ft/lbs not bad...but i wouldnt recomend it b/c about a year after that first run, the turbo started to loose boost at higher rpm's, which gave me less hp 253 to be exact, so i bought a new turbo...makes great HP and i have yet to do anything to the bottom end, im pretty sure you can run about 400hp on a stock bottom end but then agian its all how u take care of your engine
