T04B or T04E

All right, I have looked around on e-bay, diesel shops, and other internet stores that sell turbos. I have been able to find a shop that sells the Garrett T04B turbo for $220. They also sell the Garrett T04E for 395. (Neither includes shipping). Now, if anyone could explain to me the difference between those two turbos, that would be great. From what I've read on the boards so far the t04B is the older version, but I don't know if it's a lot worse, or what not. Also, are either of the two very laggy, or not?
I am not planning to boost over 10psi on my 1990 SOHC for now, and I will use it as a track car only. Is the t04 even a good choice for me? Someone with experience, please help me out. So far I am leaning towards the to4B because it lies very much within my budget. Comments, recommendations, and advice are very welcome.

heres the difference as it concerns you....

*B* is smaller and is good for up to 325-350hp

*E* is bigger and will get you up to 375-425hp

the numbers vary because the turbo is not a set size, you can get bigger compressor housings, inducers, exhaust trims etc... but these numbers will give you a max range.

Both turbos can easily mate with a T3 flange, that should be the flange size on your exhaust manifold but im not quite sure if thats true with KA's. I know CA and SR are both stock T3.

In your case I would go with the B because its cheaper and if your only gonna boost 10psi than you have no need for a big turbo since your obvioulsy not looking for top speed.

if you dont plan on going over 10 psi you might want to go even smaller with turbo size. they will give you less power but a better powerband, which would be better for road racing. im not 100%sure but i beleive the effeciency rating for a t04 is 12-26psi, if thats true you would never really get to use the turbo. you might want to look at t03, or since you are on a budget you could look at used mitsu turbo's or maybe a t-25...

Thanks for all your responses guys! I'll keep you posted on my choice and on the KA-T buildup later on. Further input appreciated!

trim and A/R info

All right, Anthony from jhdiesel.com got back to me on the available trims and A/R of the T04B.
Here's what he wrote:

********************************

The turbine trim is 62 on both.
A/R's available is .84 and 1.00, price is the same, just specify which one
you want.
The turbo is $295.00

********************************

So I guess the turbo is a little more expensive than he originally said, although I'm sure that this is still a very good price for a brand new Garrett T04B turbo. The only thing that bothers me is that the A/R is somewhat large, even at .84, it could mean long time spool up and large lag.
I did look at the turbonetics charts for the T62-1, and it seems that the car still stays in the good efficiency range under 10psi, going into maximum efficiency range at 10 psi, which is what I'm planning on boosting.
But I want some input on what this kind of trim and A/R would be like on a KA motor, if anyone has tried something similar, at similar boost levels.
Does anyone have any comments on this?

HOLY HELL man.........
Those are some frigin huge sizes. I guess I didnt catch 'em before. Dude, there aint no frigin way you saw a TO4B with a 62mm inducer, You got it confused with tyhe Turbonetics T62-1.
I think the biggest inducer for a B and E is 57mm.

10psi is nothing. Why do you want to boost so low? thats not even 1 kilo. CA's and SR's are both good for 1.2 with stock internals. You should AT LEAST be boosting 14.7psi. Its ludicrous to not do so.
