Attention all Northern California Drifters! Please read!!!

I received this message from my buddy Hubert Young. It is in regards to Altamont Motorsport Park. If you live in Northern California, or any place in the U.S.A. for that fact; please read the message below and PROVE to The
Board of Supervisors of Alameda County the sport of drifting and its community IS NOT what they "profile" it to be! I know majority of us on the Club240 forums are drift fanatics, some mechanics, others are vendors and some even drivers professional and amature. Please help support the local NorCal motorsport community keep drifting ALIVE!

From Hubert:

All,

Please help the drifting community in Northern California so they can keep
drifting at Altamont Motorsport Park! Read on the notice from
driftbattle.org...

Hubert Young

KEEP MOTORSPORTS ALIVE. KEEP DRIFTING ALIVE.

There is a direct threat to motorsports here in Northern California. The
Board of Supervisors of Alameda County is considering a ban the sport of
Drifting at Altamont Motorsports Park. Their rationale for this is the
perception that drifting is about street racing, drugs, side-shows and
gangs… a perception we have always had to fight. Well, here’s our chance to
show Alameda County (and the national media) that we are NOT associated with
any of these items. Here is our chance to announce that drifting is a
legitimate sport that is enjoyed by lawyers, students, engineers, truck
drivers, store owners – every possible segment of the community, as well as
by women and men.

In the 30+ drifting events previously held in the Bay Area over the last
three years, not once have the Police been involved; not once has any driver
been seriously injured on the track; and, not once has any
controlled/uncontrolled substance been used at any event. It is apparent
that Alameda County is unfairly profiling the drifting community. We are
being discriminated due to race, age, and gender. Simply because over 80% of
our enthusiasts are minorities, young and male, we are classified as "a
threat" to the community. In some ways, this is exactly the same “profile”
that was applied to drag racers in the 1960’s… which is now an
internationally recognized, multi-billion dollar segment of the motorsports
community.

Any of us can attest that if Alameda County is successful in banning
drifting at Altamont Motorsports Park, it will provide conditions that could
do tremendous damage throughout Northern California. Parents, police
officers, drift drivers, educators, and business owners agree that if
drifting is ban from Altamont Motorsports Park, it will create a condition
in the Bay Area that will actually promote illegal street racing and promote
other unsafe activities by young people. If drifting is not allowed, where
will young drivers practice drifting, road racing, or other forms of
motorsports around the Bay Area? And then, what’s next to go? Road racing?
Skateboarding? Street rods?

Drifting is yet another form of motorsport in which anyone with an interest
can enjoy their love of cars, speed, competition, etc. Altamont Motorsports
Park and its new owners have, over the course of the last year, provided us
a safe and controlled means to practice and compete. THEY NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
OUR SPORT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT! We need your support to show Alameda County
that this is important to us, to the business community, and to our local
communities.

How to help:

Send a letter, or fax or e-mail to:
Alameda County Planning Department
224 W. Winton, Room 111
Hayward, CA 94544

e-Mail: chris.bazar@acgov.org
Fax: 510-785-8793

Mr. Chris Bazar, Planning Director, is a GOOD GUY and a friend to drifters
and Altamont Motorsports Park… so don’t take your frustration out on him!
Instead, be supportive and positive. In your letter or e-mail, tell Alameda
County about your professional background. Tell them how drifting keeps you
off the streets. Tell them how safe and controlled the sport is. Tell them
how much money you spend (especially in Alameda County) supporting
businesses that support drifting and Altamont Motorsports Park. Tell them
how you obey traffic rules when traveling to or from Altamont Motorsports
Park.

All letters, e-mails and faxes MUST be received by Alameda County by 5:00pm
Monday, April 23.

More info at www.driftbattle.org

***For those of you who cannot mail or fax a letter and wish to help us out, you may either post your reply on this thread here, or you may either PM me or email me directly and I will have everything finalized into one HUGE letter and sent to Mr. Chris Bazar. - Nismo***

I would like to see them ban drifting just to see the "tremendous damage" that would be instilled on the area.

Man this sucks it seems every other month someone is trying to close off Altimont to the drifting community. Wasn't there just a legal beef with the homeowners just last month????

There was, the local residents have been complaining to the county for the past year that we "cause problems" like street racing, "side shows", wreckless driving, and some residents I've heard even complain that we not only do drugs, but sell it around the area. One, I know a lot of the people who attend Altamont for drifting, and WE ARE CLEAN! Another thing that gets me is, if we are such a nussance, where are the cops? How come no one calls the cops on us when the problem is occuring? No? I wonder why...

UPDATE!

As some of you may know by now, Drifting has now been suspended from Altamont.

What gets me really POed is the fact that some IDIOT would buy a house up on a f*king hill and mind you he bought 57 ACRES! Yet he builds his lame a$$ f*king house 120 feet away from Altamont Motorsports Park... WTF IS UP WITH THAT SH*T?

As stated in this quote:

But county Supervisor Scott Haggerty, who represents the area, isn't very sympathetic.

"If people move close to a horse stable, they should be prepared to smell the manure,'' Haggerty said. "If they buy a house next to a racetrack, they should be prepared to hear cars racing."

I wonder what the guy was thinking when he bought the damn property. I for one, would LOVE to live right next door to Altamont Raceway. All I would ever ask for is a simple little roadway that leads to the track, from my garage and a discount to enter the drifting events.

We as a drifting community need to educate those who do not understand our culture. This has gotten me motivated to get this issue out further past the bay area. I'm planning to make it at least known out here in Sacramento about how stupid this guy was to move out there. HE KNEW what he was getting into when he bought the land, so why b*tch about the sh*t hole he got into?

Sorry, had to vent. But I will make this be heard beyond the bay area.

Ah, I just reposted this the other day. I'd say put it in the drifting section, but I guess it was a local thing to start with.

I'm concerned also. I know what it takes away from the racing community as a whole, and it just promotes more "practice" on the streets. It's a bad move, but what can you do I guess? I'm sure if we keep pushing a whole bunch of people can make some kind of difference.
