wiring up a stereo questions

You need to find your stock amplifier and bypass it.
Lets make a check list.
Does the radio come on? If it does, then you're getting Acc, 12v, and Ground.
If not, then you need to find a proper source for power.
Do the speakers come on after the radio has been powered? If they work correctly, then obviously everything is good.
If not, then what are they doing? Crackling? No sound at all? If that is the case there are TWO things you can do as stated before. Bypass the factory amplifier OR Rewire the car, by running your own speaker wiring.
Ok, let me try to clear something up for you if you don't understand WHY the factory amplifier needs to be bypassed.
In an entirely stock system, your stock radio gives out a low audio output. The factory amplifier takes that low output and amplifies it to a higher output so you get better sound from your radio.
An aftermarket headunit has somewhat of a built in amplification system which enables it to output higher watts per channel; that is, the audio output is already amplified!
When you put an aftermarket radio into your car, it is sending an already amplified signal to your factory amplifier which tries to amplify it yet AGAIN. This will NOT work, which is why you won't get sound unless you bypass that factory amplifier.
It's like this:
Radio----->Amplifier---->Speakers
In your case, you want Radio----->Speakers
Bypass that ****!

It's going to be different for the S14 and S13, I know that sometimes they mount the main amp right between the two rear speakers in the coupe--not sure about the hatch though.
You should be able to tell what it looks like...the only other metal box like that should be the ECU, and thats in the passengers kick panel with a LARGE harness going into it.
