s13 vs s14 sr20: which is better?

Im planning on doing the swap but in the process of my research ive noticed that a large number of people swap the s13 sr20 instead of the s14 sr20 into their 95+ 240s. Is there any reason for this other than cost considerations (im assuming s13 swap is cheaper all around)? I would think that even though the s14 clip itself may cost more, it would be easier and less costly to install because it is a direct swap into the s14 chasis.

Any and all info regarding the advantages of using the s13 over the s14 version of the sr20 in an s14 chasis would be greatly appreciated!

Christian

The swap is equally as easy no matter what clip you get but most people choose to save the money on the front clip by getting the red top and using the money saved to upgrade that.

If you are going to leave the sr20det stock then get a newer motor but if you upgrade, don't waste your money on the newer motor.

IM also planning on doing this swap. I chose to do an s13 into a 95.

The s14 comes stock with more HP. The s14 and s15 have low port. s13 has a highport. If you plan on upgrading then the s13 would be a lot better and could reach higher hp. If you plan on leaving it on stock then go with s14 or s15.

hope this helps.

Sounds like a plan. I think the other reason they like the S13 is it is a red top.

Looks better sitting under the hood.

I remember hearing that the s13 is OBDI which makes it easier to tune and therefore makes it a better option to swap.

????????

Ok, now I'm all kinds of confused/worried!! What is everyone's opinion. I don't know enough about the difference between low port and high port. Why is it that the high port can get more hp?? I'm out to dyno in at least 425 whp. But it just seems that the S14 is a better motor. I am admittadely a newbie when it comes to the Nissan scene. Please help me out here!!

Get an s14 if you dont plan on doing much to the engine. Get the s13 if youre gonna change all internals, etc.

The other things to consider are that the S14 & S15 came with Variable Valve Timing and a slightly larger ball-bearing turbo (T28)
The "short" and the "long" refer to the intake plenum. The "longer" runners give you a better low end response due to air velocity and the ventulli effect. The short runners provide the mass of air needed for higher revving engine set-ups.... i.e. bigger cams, large turbo (lag)...
You really don't have to start thinking about these things until you peak the 400hp zone.
One other thing to consider, is the S14 came with a somewhat stronger tranny; not likely to break as quick when you're dropping the hammer race after race.
FYI - S13 tranny (on avg.) generally break the main shaft when pushing over 400hp. Greddy makes an upgraded shaft (somewhere around Y50,000 - Y60,000), of course..while the trans. is out (by a shop) you might as well replace the gears too.

Both are fine for your application; although the S14s will prob have less miles.

Ok

So the S14 engine isn't good for building high hp setups?? I had always heard the 14's and 15's were the ones to build if you were planning on running 400+whp. NZO, what was your reasoning behind running the 13 if I wanted to do heavy mods?? I'm definately planning on upgrading the turbo once the engine is built. That's a must!! Just let me know something. Thanx for the info already too guys.

Tuners/drifters/racers in japan frequently use the s13 because they push pretty high HP and the extra bs that is used for VTC on s14 and s15s isnt there which doesnt matter since VTC is just a waste of atomic mass on a high hp engine. Although s14/15s are good for high hp setups, people here usually just go with the s13 because its initially less expensive and you can put more money toward internals, new turbo, injectors, etc. Like anything else with cars, it all depends on how much money you want to spend. You should do some searching and researching on freshalloy.com forums. Lots of good info regarding your question.

If you want to open your hood and have "ooh ahhh" get the S14-S15, for the most HP for the $$$'s get a Redtop S13 and upgrade the turbo and injectors, and add a SAFC. All the S13-S14 engines will swap into either car, it's just wiring changes which are minor.
