Okay here's the deal. My car has 150,000 miles on the original engine (maybe 1 of them by me because I just purchased the car) and it now needs new rings because it smokes pretty bad when driven. Would it be worth it to have the new rings installed, or just buy a whole new motor for it (and what motor would be the least expensive/best deal)? It would be a no brainer to get a new engine if I had the cash but since I am a "broke college kid" I don't know what to do with it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

 

everyone is doing sr/rb engine swaps, you should find another ka for pretty cheap. on the other hand, if you have time and the know-how, why not rebuild the motor

 

As airborn said..if you know how to and have the time to rebuild it, go for it. But if not...or you dont want that much of a hassel go for a KA24DE with pretty low mileage(at least under 130k)

 

Thanks guys, that sounds good. I'm no master mechanic but I do know my way around an engine. I've never rebuilt one myself (except for small engines). The car isn't real smooth on low end, it kind of skips and pops a little, I would assume this has to do with the rings. I would think it would be a lot of work to replace the rings myself since it's a dual overhead cam, so how much would that run me to have a shop do it?

They maybe arent the cheapest, but their prices arent bad for quality motors.

You can supposedly get SR20s for 1100 bucks off this other site, but somehow, i think there is something amiss in a deal like that...if its too good to be true....

tdogg1286: i'm sure there are bunch of 240 guys in NY area that's getting rid of the ka from their cars...browse around in classified forums and you may be lucky.

i picked up a ka24de (in perfect running condition) for like $80.

Damn! Thats a great deal. Since this is the first time i've really paid much attention to 240's this might sound like a dumb question, but is the ka24de the stock engine in the 240sx? And what car has the sr20det engine in it stock (if any)?

 

I have two single OHC motors sitting around collecting dust....

There are other variations like SR20VE with variable valve timing and other letters, but I think this answers your question.

Beware when you get your engine that you get a lower mile one. Nissans seem to go downhill fast at around 150-160k miles. my car had just rolled over 160k and then got a valvetrain rattle, brake master started leaking, clutch master failed, and finally the engine blew a head gasket. I got lucky and got a 122k mile DOHC swap for $250 from a guy who bought a SR20. my ultimate quest is NO CAR PAYMENT, so these things have to be tolerated. Eventually you'll run out of parts to replace and it will be all good.

 

Thanks for the advice. I definately won't be getting an engine with over 130,000 miles on it. The head gasket was replaced on my current engine along with a whole new crank.
