How would I remove illegal tint?

I bought my eclipse spyder last year, and it came with near-limo tint. obviously illegal, but 10 months and no problems. recently, my fiance got pulled over by a sheriff with probably nothing better to do and gave her a warning to remove the illegal tint. a friend told me soap and water would allow it to peel off. Any suggestions? i dont want to have to go to a shop and get charged.
