Gas Gauge mystery
Gas Gauge mystery
Hey I was driving to school today and after a while I was on the road (fairly uphill and at highway speeds) my gas gauge fell to the bottom of the display (below E where it would normally stop on empty).
What was weird was when I slowed down to go through downtown my gauge returned up but still messed up when I went up or down as if the sensor (i'm guessing) was floating around with the movement of the car.
Whats happening? how do I fix it to the way it was?
The car is a 96 SE stock.

Wow and I thought my gas gauge was normal doing that "fluctuation" thing.
I usually wait til I get to a red light to "accurately" check my gas level... then again I don't let it go past 1/4 anyways, so I'm safe

some days, i can drive to the store which is about 3 miles from my house.... with a full tank, i turn off the car, then whe i get back out to turn it on again it reads i have a 3/4 of gas
i know sr's didnt get that good mileage but not THAT BAD

I don't have the FSM in front of me but off the top of my head you have a floater in your tank and that gives you the signal for how much gas you have.
Check the plug to it and if it is good then you might have to change the floater.
If you change the floater change the pump while it is out to a walbro so when you go ka-t, sr or modded N/A KA you will have fuel to spare.
I will get you a real answer when I get home.

I almost thought I saw my gas light go on for like a fraction of a second, but then again I was driving under a long L.A. bridge so it might have been my imagination, because I too have never actually "seen" it go on.
mine comes on all the time. i beleive on another forum some people had the same deal as me, at least 2 gallons left after the needle hits the empty mark. my needle has dipped down almost another quarter below the E line, with the gas light coming and going. Ive also noticed that the needle moves down faster after the halfway mark, I dunno what the deal is, but atleast I feel like I can never run out of gas.
Call it paranoia, but there's this little thing I've always done to my cars - I would go to the gas station, fill up the tank to max, then readjust the gas needle so that it is exactly at the "F" line (usually it goes over when you have a full tank). That way when the needle hits the "E" line I know I still have enough gas to get home. I guess this little trick might have been born out of my high school days when I was more concerned with beer and club tickets then I was with filling up my car with gas... I mean, you have to get home after partying, right?
i got the solution for this imbroglio...
simply drive your car untill it dies out on gas... have a little emergency filler upper and then hahaha yeah now you know when you need gas... yeah ermm do it in a place you know and probably have someone tag along with you..
of course this will onyl take place on one of those boring days

I reset my trip gauge everytime I fill up. (My ford's gauge don't work 11 gallons gets me 200miles in a 14 gallon tank, hey I always have 3 to spare.)
The nissan is fugged up. I get like 100miles and it is empty. But they are fun miles
