how to increase gas mileage

i was watching a video on metacafe when i saw this video on the side on how to double gas mileage. it started off with regular tune-up stuff, but ive never heard of the next part before. if you put in 2oz. of 100% pure acetone for every 10gal. in your car, your gas mileage will increase pretty good.

heres the vid
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/524517...gas_mileage_2x

and a link with information on this
http://pesn.com/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/

have any of you heard about this or done it?

intresting....but i'm not sure acetone will work well for too long with the plastic and rubber parts. i know it's very diluted (2 oz for 10 gal) but i'm not too sure about it. you may encounter premature fuel pump and or injector failure.

edit
after watching it again i'm even more skeptical about the claims. the narrator starts off by saying that car manufacturers and oil companies don't want you to know this. if i were making cars (suvs in particular) i'd be in favor of increasing fuel efficacy. it's high gas prices that is hurting the sales of large suvs and causing people to buy small environment friendly cars.
secondly you never see the meter again once the claims are being made about the acetone.

the way i see it, there is some truth with some deception. i could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time i've been wrong but i just don't buy the claims about engine longevity.

yeah i was wondering about that stuff too but in the 2nd link, at the bottom of the page under "follow-up" it says that they tested it with o-rings, pump diaphragms, plastic fittings, hose parts, and other neoprene/n-buna stuff, and the results were almost unnoticeable

interesting. does anybody know who narrated it? is it just some average joe, a news spokesperson, etc?

as with anything that can potentially ruin your car, and is all of a sudden 'new,' someone will be skeptical. Anybody willing to try it for real? haha. i dont have an odometer, so im out

it kind of sounds like the guy from the second link, Sterling D. Allan. if you go to the bottom of the page there is a link to an audio intro by him.

Last year when I had my Z, and the whole acetone in the gas thing got big, I was putting acetone in my gas. I probably did it for 6 months. It didn't hurt anything in that time span, but it didn't really give me any better gas mileage. I've heard it varies by car, so maybe I'll try it on the 240. Probably not though, it didnt do anything the first time.
