How to set TDC?
Ok just got my valve cover off. My upper timing chain guide is broken and im assuming has been for a while. Anyway, I need to know how to set the #1 pis. to TDC. I know that there are markings on the chain itself and the cam sprockets but I am wondering how to actually turn the motor. I dont think I have a socket big enough to fit the crank. Any quick, accurate suggestions would be most helpful!!! I have searched the forum and am still searching the FSM but cant find anything.
EDIT: So if I find that the timing guides are both broken then that cant be causing the rattling. Actually I am 100% postive that some/if not all the rattling noise is coming from the chain itself hitting the valve cover (inspected the underside of the valve cover and there are scrub marks where the chain has hit the cover). So with this the only logical thing it could be is the tensioner. Ive got the car back together now and will be going to the parts store to get a socket big enough to turn the crank. What size do I need?

to set top dead center... since you have the valve cover off already... turn the crank until the timming pointer points to the second mark on your crank pully... then look at the cams... the lobes on each cam should be pointing away from the spark plugs... if the lobes are pointing towards the center of the motor rotate the crank one more time...to line everything up... here is a pic of what im talking about... thanks to jim wolf tech....

thanks wikd...im going to try it tonight and see what I come up with. I am almost positive the rattling is the chain hitting the valve cover. Which probably means its the tensioner. So Ill have to check it and make sure it still works like it should. Spray it down with some carb cleaner or something...or just replace it. I also have to try and find the broken peices of the guide

the guide parts are either in the head or in the pan... i have seen them in most places... if you have the valve cover off look at it for marks from the timing chain... if they are there then that might be the problem... if not then it could be a little more indepth than that...it could be the chain hitting the front timing chain cover...

took the front cover off...got the second guide out, it was fully intact. There is a good bit of slack in the chain at some points. The pistons would compress and then I would feel the motor give...a lot, then there would be slack in the chain. Damn....
