O.C. Cops Stopping for Intercoolers
Found this on our CA Sports Car Club Message Board:
Don't know if this is true but it came from a very reliable source:
"...Seems the Orange County Sherrif's Department went on a shopping spree. They were out buying Intercoolers. Big ones, little ones, fat ones, skinny ones, all sorts of intercoolers from all sorts of vendors. You know Orange County Ca is the headquarters of many aftermarket performance companies... so their pickins was good, and they got a variety.
But WHY would the Orange County Sherrif's Department need INTERCOOLERS of all things?
WHY TO PUT ON A CLASS FOR STOP AND INSPECT PROCEDURES!
Of course!
They had a nice, little class on what intercoolers were, and how to identify ILLEGALLY MODIFIED aftermarket turbocharger systems. See, that BIG SILVER INTERCOOLER you got up front, is now an INDETIFIABLE reason tostop you under that new SMOG LAW that has that provision in it about "the officer has probable reason to suspect the vehicle or component on the vehicle is not in compliance with this section" for stopping and doing a roadside inspection.
So all he does is pull you over cause he saw that honkin intercooler, and he's been trained to KNOW that that's an aftermarket component of a typically non-CARB legal modification, and now it's a reason (thanks to the new SMOG law, to pull you over.
So they can write you a ticket, that generates a minimum of $10 in court costs (and whatever fees they tack on), PLUS it generates a stop at the REFEREE'S STATION for CARB COMPLIANCE CHECK... and what a way to stimulate the economy, putting all these tuner shops into the business of installing and uninstalling performance components several times?"
"Story related how a guy with a Subie just de-installed $11,000 of components at GREAT cost so he could make the "72 hour appear" requirement on the ticket. Wanna make a bet if too many of the cited vehicles pass, that "24 hour appearance" that is in the code will start making a more pronounced comeback?"
Again, I can't verify the veracity of the above, but I have no reason to doubt the messenger.
Think twice about getting that Front mounted IC !

Maybe its ignorance on my part but why is a intercooler an illegal mod. Or is it just a reason for them to think that you may have something illegal?

well basically if u have an intercooler, it means u have a turboed motor, and in most cars in the world are not stock turbo, so that means the engine under ur hood has been modified and probably most of the parts if not the motor itself is illegal, even if the intercooler is a legal mod which some are, the parts that accompany the intercooler are more than likely illegal
