Which option?

Hello Everyone!
I have been pondering the last couple of weeks as to the next car I will be buying. I want to buy my 1st car for tuner purposes to eventually get into drifting as well as circuit courses (for fun and who knows where it will take me).
The car that I want to buy is a '97 Nissan 240SX and there is one for sale in my area however it is an automatic (*shudders*) for about $8750US. However if I buy this car then I will be getting tapped out for money to add mods to it. So here is my dilemma and I appreciate every's opinion(keep it legit please)...
Option #1:
Buy the '97 240SX auto and immediately swap to a 5spd and then will have to wait a long time to start modding it out the way I want to.....
Option#2:
Buy an earlier model '93 5spd for $1500-$2000US and have a good junk of money($4500US) to mod it out completely within a short time frame....
Option#3:
Buy the '93 and mod it up a little and save up the money in the next year or 2 till I finally find a '97 5spd. Sell the '93 and have the money then to start modding the '97 over a pretty decent length time frame...with this option I believe I will spend(maybe waste) more money then option#1 to get the results I want but I am not a person to sit and wait...I want a good performer quickly

OK now I know whether I go for the '93 and mod it out I will be very happy with a fun and fast car (somewhat easy to please in that department) but I really want the '97.
However, due to the fact that this will be my 1st modded car(but not a rookie in the sports car scene by any stretch of the imagination) I think it would be wise to go for the '93(cheaper and easier to mod) that I could learn from it and become educated and experienced in the modding and drifting/racing area that it would be a good option to pursue...
Any friendly and wise advice out there as to what I should do or what you would do in my situation. Thanks everyone for your help!

yeah, i'd go with the 93.. make sure it's an SE, so you have HICAS, ABS, and LSD. .. why do you want the 97? I believe earlier models are lighter, and have the same engine... newer ones do look pretty sweet though.... but for a first car, i'd get an early model... don't want to buy a 97 and end up messing it up, and not be able to find another one... that would suck.. they only made like 24,000 of them I believe.

i think it was optional on SE cars. theres a thread in the wheel/suspension forum that talks about it. someone posted a pic and i cant remember nor do i feel like searching for it, but im pretty sure it was an SE option. also, if you plan on doing any track drifting with the '93 HICAS is basically extra weight. if you're planning on straight circuit racing, yeah go with HICAS.

I'm pretty positive your right, just trying to clear things up, so if he wants HICAS he don't get an SE thinking it does and then it turns out it doesn't

Thanks guys for ur input...
The reason why I want a '97 is primarily due to the style. I like it so much better then all the others.
I forgot to add 1 thing from the original post. With the 2 different years I was going to do 2 totally different engine mods...
The '97 I want to keep as a 4 cylinder and port&polish it and either run a super or turbo charger hoping to push anywhere from 350 to 400HP(keep it modest hehee). Nothing like taking out a V8 with a lil 4 banger eh?
The '93 I would do an engine swap.
I just got back from looking at the '97(he's willing to drop the price down $1000) and while I was going there I passed a couple '90-'92's and I am totally set on the '97 because of the style.
Now another question comes to mind...instead of buying this '97 auto and deal with installing a 5spd what if I buy a '95/'96 5spd and do a front end clip change? I am planning on doing a body kit for it anyways.

mmmm decisions decisions
Keep your input coming...much appreciated
