yeah, it acts as a resonator. A bulge in the piping deflects the sound waves, thus making it sound a little quieter. But I'm not sure if removing that resonator would make a bid difference in sound though.

you can't even call that a resonator...theres nothing to baffle the sound...unlike the other ones...w/ chambers w/ or w/o packing

i have a s14....soo...yea...that "thing" refers to the cat/resonator ... and i see u have an n1....so if you look under ur car...u would have a CAT the THING then a resonator and then ur N1 muffler....
so if we call that thing a resonator....my car has 2 resonators and a muffler....

AND!! i have a full cat-back system.. so no res for me now!! im lookin at my stock one and i dont see a 'thing' between the cat and res..

haha....thats what im saying...that "thing" u call the cat....is a resonator...so...the CATBACK systems are Resonator backs....im thinking we have a precat on the headers....im too lazy to go out in the parking lot and check....so..if there is no precat on the headers...then....the s14 HAS NO CATS AT ALL~! im talking KA...not the Sr20

thats true.. why? because when they first made the dohc.. the people at nissan fudged up and made the gearing bigger than its supposed to.. the reason the honeycomb stuff is there is to pass CARB regulations..
