Service check light?!?!

hi, im kinda new to nissans, i've had atleast one honda in my driveway for as long as i can remember (18 years). i jus bought a 240 and my "service engine soon" light came on yesterday. on hondas i could bridge the ecu to itself and recieve the error code. is there some way to do this on a 240? or is the light on because of something regarding emissions? thanks in advance.

how many miles does your 98 have?....when i bought my 92 it was misfiring in cylinder 3 as well. as it turned out, i had sparked and i was puzzled. then a friend suggested i might have a dead injector, so i changed that and it has ran like a champ since then. so check and see if it has spark...to do this, pull the boot out so it is just hnaging there, start it up. pull the wire out of the cylinder the hole and see if it is getting spark. also...another thing....try this while it's running. pull each wire one by one and see if it does anything when you pull them off. if it doesn't do jack, the wire is either junk or the injector is. good luck./

im only runnin at 26k miles. i replaced the spark plug and got the light turned off again. if it doesnt come back on then yippee. i'll check for a spark today. im pretty sure its not my wires cuz when i pulled the wires out when it was runnin to check the compression, the rpm drop considerably in each cylinder.

ok on hondas the cylinders are numbered starting from the opposite side of the dist cap. is it the same with nissans? or do i jus go by the numbers on the wires. which would start frum the dist cap. also, can i pull the fuse for the ecu to reset the ecu like on hondas? in sorry if these seem like stupid questions. im jus now gettin away frum hondas and into sumthin different. any help is appreciated.

i'll check my manual tomorrow for the firing order on the distributor cap. as far as resetting the ecu, on older nissans all you had to do was dissconnect the battery cable for like ten minutes for it to reset. this was before obdII came into effect, so i'm not sure about resetting the ecu on your 98. call a dealer and ask them. if they won;t tell you i can call my friend who used to be a nissan service tech.

alirght, by process of elimination i narrowed it down to my spark plug. i replaced all of them and got tha light turned off. next day, poof, light on again. gas cap not closed enough. emissions kids left it loose. so now tha light is off again. thanks battle. if sumthin pops up you guys will hear frum me again. thanks again.
