i got some black spray paint, sandpaper, bondo, JB weld, sheetmetal, and sheetmetal scissors.

thoroughly clean around holes that you are going to patch.

cut sheetmetal

JB weld sheet metal to the inside of the holes that you are patching

wait 24 hours

bondo over

sand

paint

 

how good does the jb weld hold up?

 

ive heard people repairing cracked blocks, oil pans, even porcelin dolls with jb weld, it should be ok.

 

jb weld is the ****... there's almost no pressure on their anways, not like its gonna pop off

 

werd on jb weld, even the "quick" type holds very well for an application like this. if you have an s13 there is no need to have the hatch professionally painted just a little rattlecan and know-how can get you a paint job that will match the rest of the car. (primer, base coat, then progressive wetsand, then clear)

 

i'm just curious as to this whole jb weld fix thing. i'm thinking about doing this tomorrow but i have a few questions. my wing was left on way too long and one of the holes is pretty big. how hard is it to bend the sheetmetal for the curve of the hatch? did you use clamps? what all tools are required to cut the sheetmetal and so on? how did you go about cleaning up the rust that was already there (sand paper, dremel tool, cut it out)? i really want to get rid of the duct tape so let me know.

 

sand off the rust, just use sheetmetal cutters (available at your local hardware store) and just stick the sheetmetal under the hole securely with jb weld (it dosent have to by anywhere near perfect - thats what the body filler is for). yea so just lay down the body filler over the sheetmetal part to smooth it out. and then sand as needed
