used oil and dirt in the oil. bakes right into the block. it happens over time, but with great amount of time, you can degrease it out... a little.

Dead thread, i know,
but what happens if i dont set my distributor to TDC before i do this? I didnt set any of that stuff before I yanked everything off. Does it prevent me from taking off the front cover? It WILL NOT move. Also, when I pulled off the valve cover the top guide was already gone- but it was broken off. The base was still there with the bolts holding it on, but the whoe part that goes around the chain is gone. Any chance it fell down somewhere, or do you think somebody else broke off the top part on purpose and left the base in there? It was rattling like a **** even with the top one gone.

if you dont set tdc, you will have to do it if you rotate the button.

rotating the button puts the dizzy out of phase and you will not get spark. the front cover just doesnt fall off, you have to carefully pry it away with a flathead screw driver.

if that peice broke off and your motor has not blown yet, im willing to bet all the bits lay down in your oil pan which you will have to remove in order to get it out.

Yeah, I found out the hard way when my car would not start lol. All fixed though. Dude, I was BEATING that front cover with a mallet and chisel and it wouldnt come off. It's like it was JB Welded or something lol. I guess I'll give it another try soon. When I weld on the bung for my oil return I'll see if anything is down there.
