Extreme coolant problem

First off my car was overheating badly a week ago while I was on the highway and smoke was coming from the engine bay. After getting it towed to a shop the guy told me I needed a water pump. Got the water pump and thermostat replaced, but the car stil overheats. After the water pump install, the car still overheats and causes the coolant to bubble in the tank and subsequently spill out. I have no clue whats happening, but I don't think it's the headgsket. There is no oil in my coolant and vice-versa. Can anyone help me?

You can have a blown head gasket that lets combustion chamber pressure into the coolant without getting any oil in the coolant, unfortunately...

I would suggest that a good first step would be borrowing a cooling system pressure tester from your local AutoZone or Checker/Schucks/Kragen and checking the integrity of the system.

you might have a hairline crack in your radiator somewhere. if that's the case you can do like i did and put some all temp silicone gasket maker on it untill you get a new radiator.

you may have the scenario where the overheated such a long time, it scratched all the cilinder walls and the crankshaft so much, that oil is no longer lubricating it enough so it overheats. Extremly rare, but deadly. To test this, do a compresion test. Fixing it might be as easy as buying one of those metal cans called "engine Restore" it improved my compresion by 32 psi ( Think thats the measure). But maybe its somethign else that caused the overheating in the first place ( Before the water pump), and your mechanic told you the water pump to make sum $$. Who knows test everything, good luck.

Sounds like the head gasket or a severe coolant blockage.
