how to replace alternator?

ive searched, but i havent really found good info on how to replace an alternator on the ka24e. Im mostly concerned about how to loosen/tighten the belts in order to remove/install the alternator from the engine bay. I also want to know whether i should remove it from the top or bottom of the car.

If anyone could give me step by step directions, that would be great.

first if you have the mechanical fan still on the water pump i will make it easyer to work if you remove it. first remove the p/s belt then the ant. the p/s belt has an idler pully loosen that and the belt come off. the alt. has a long bolt that secures it to the engine, but first loosen the tension bolt then the bolt it pivets on.

all you need is four wrenches; 10mm, 12mm, and two 14mm. if you do remove the fan it's real easy to work from the top of the car until you need to remove the piveting bolt. there's not much to it.

i understand why the battery needs to be disconected for alot of prosesures but honestly i've never bothered to do it and never had a problem. with that said i don't want to sound like i'm encurageing others to be neglagent. so yes defanetly disconect the terminals. but because i never do i failed to mention that step.

I have a couple of questions.

I already removed the shroud and the fan. But im not sure which pulley is the idler pulley u mentioned (i labeled the pullies in the pic below)...and could you tell me how to loosen it? Do i just loosening the bolt in the center of the pulley?

pulley #1 you first loosen the nut on the face of the pully then the bolt. the bolt is what tightens and loosens the belt. the nut just holds it in place. both are 12mm i belive could be 14mm i don't remember but i dosen't realy matter.

pulley #2 remains in place, aswell as #4 and #5 don't worry about them at all.

for pulley #3 first loosen the bolt on the face of the alt. then the longer more noticable bolt, both are 12mm. at this point you might be able to pivet the alt back and forward. there is a 14mm bolt under is that holds it in place. take that one off and the alt. will come off completly. then just remove the wires and your ready to instal the new one.

to put everything back together the only thing you realy need to do is make sure you place the alt. belt on first then the p/s. you don't even need to tighten enything untill you got everything in place.

this is a bit of a long read but realy simple to do. also you didn't have to remove the fan and shroud but now you have more room to work with.

My car has no fan shroud so I was able to remove the alternator and take it out from the top. It was easy.
