Mountain TT car - 250whp - Turbo or NA???

Naturally, I had to have a question that fit in two different forum topics at once... So I am creating two joint threads for this one. NA guys can post yay's and nay's here while you boosting guys can do the same on the other thread: http://www.club240.com/forums/showth...threadid=22575

First, a bit on what I want my car for... For all you Togue fans out there, that is what I do. There are a good 20 choice mountain passes from the Bay Area down to LA that my friends and I frequent. 3:00am time trials sometimes for an hour at a time through windy backroads. I am not much for top-end highway racing, nor for off-the-line sprints. An engine with good response and some nice mid-range power is my bag.

So on to my question: I am looking at purchasing a 91-93 240 hatch, and while my budget for the whole car is in the teens, I want to spend roughly $4k on the engine. (engine alone - doesnt include exhaust/lsd/tranny stuff)
*I am looking for ~250 whp, 240 would be ok.
*With a budget of $4k, I plan to use the KA24DE - since swapping to a SR20DET would cost me 4k just to get it in the car and in stock trim would only produce ~180 whp.

Because I am new to the KA24DE motors, I am turning to you guys who know about the engine's potential.

So, would it be better to purchase a full turbo kit and have it installed, or to go about some form of NA tuning to reach 250 whp??
I would love to hear as much input as possible and as many ideas as possible.

Keep in mind that this is a 250hp time attack car, not a highway runner or a drag racer, and that $4k has to include labor (though I can find labor for fairly cheap)

I am quite willing to modify this criterium and to consider alternate methods upon suggestion

Thanks!
-Ryan

NA KA that makes that power is going to cost WAY more that 4k.

I suggest you find another hobby.

Entry Level race cars are about 10-12k alone.

If you dont do the labor your self then your a waste of human.

a KA-T setup will easily surpass your hp goals while leaving you some room in your budget for the stuff that really matters.
you won`t have NA response, but iDoubt you`ll need it for some initial D style fun like you`re talking about.

AWH you must be heading out to the Gilroy area to hit the touge.......
Actually an NA KA at 225CHP is possible at 4 grand, then over time you can upgrade the engine management to an AEM system and get over 250CHP........

Land_HoS13 your posts reek with unhelpful moronic input. Don't bother.

Turbo does seem the way to go, but this being the NA side of the forum, what would be required to get to 250 hp on a KA?

You don't want a turbo for uphill terain, it slows down spooling time.............

If you want a better faster NA here are your options....

Upgrade to the sohc 1990 pistons or you can cloverleaf weld the KA head at any reputable head shop.........

Look for thinner head gaskets.......

JimWolfe Technology offers advanced timing gears up to 4 degress in advancement.........

Fuel injection for side feed you have a wide variety of SR20 DET injectors to chose from or CA18DET injectors if you decide to go top feed injection........

Walbro offers the 255 fuel pump, or you can go with the 300z or toyota Supra fuel pump, you will want a fuel regulator..........

MAFS you can go with the Q45, 300z, or any maf larger than KA stock maf, but you will need a SAFC or computer reprogram for this mod to function correctly...........

With a TB spacer atomizer you can install Honda H22, Ford Mustang 5.0, or rb 26/30det TB's........

For higher rev and the uphill togue you will wan't CA18det retainers and springs, and forged internals through topline.......

Fidanza aluminum fly wheel, with a daiken/exedy clutch recomended for grip under higher HP.........

Enlarged valves at .040, and the port and hone of the mani......

Cams I would go with the Jim Wolfe technology to stay smog legal.....

That should push you to your 250HP, and can easily be done under $4000 if you chose to take the time to find cheap shops like I am doing........

Rebello racing offered to do my build up for $4000+, I decided to be smarter than that and go to the shops that they sub there work out to.......
Right now I have spent $2500, and it will cost me a grand to have my girlfriend uncle assemble the engine together in his shop........

My build will be under $4000 when it is complete.......

Since you live in the ya area I can get you the hook up on the shops, but get the parts ur self......

Does that help?????????
