No MAF or timing issue

So i just bought a 91 240 and dropped in another KA24DE and im having some trouble getting it to start. Everything but the MAF sensor(dont have one) is there and hooked up right so im wondering will the car run with out the MAF. Timing was off but I did get it to run for a maybe a minute just messing with the distributor. So how important is the MAF or does the timing need to be that precise?

actually i need to rephrase my first post. the engine will not start or run without the maf being installed but it will start and run if the pig tail for the maf were to get disconnected. while with the pigtail disconcerted the engine will start and run, it will die at about 2.5k rpms though.
