SCV Removal
wondering more or less how to remove the scv and any other components i may need to. read about it in one of Vinnie's posts and i figured since i have my manifold off, I might as well do it. any help ?

If you are going to remove you scv you need to remove the butterfly's from your intake, or you can just go to the salvage yard and get an intake mani from a 96 or up 240 because they do not have the butterflies in the intake.

i know that much but does any one have any pics or anything. the fsm shows the scv but it controls those pieces of metal in the intake manifold. are those the butterflies themselves. i just dont want to screw anything up.

yes they are the butterflies. the easiest way to do it is to go to a salvage yard and buy a 96 -98 intake manifold, because it is a ready to bolt on mod and you don't have to go through the bull and time consuming work of removing the butterflies and filling in all the holes in each intake tube from removing the rod that holds the butterflies.

another question though. would simply removing the butterflies but leaving the rod in place yield any gains. i figure it would and it would be alot easier than filling all the holes caused by the removal of the rod.

What you can do is unscrew each butterfly. Then unlock the rod from the mani, or cut it out which ever one is faster for you. Then JB weld, or aluminum weld the holes closed. It won't yield as much as it could with out the removal of the rod as well since it takes up space in the runners.
I have 2 OBD2 non scv manifolds if you would like one $110 shipped anywhere in the U.S...
If you would like I can port/hone them for you for $100 more for a total of $210 out the door shipped.

quick question, i have a 93 parts car and it doesnt have scvs. i was a bit puzzled so i searched and it appears late model 93s and after did not come with scvs as well. anyone care to confirm this info?

I was just given a manifold with an OBD1 TB/TPS, and the manifold didn't come with butterfly's. I can't confirm if it came from a 93. I do know working on 95 model years with a 94 production date, don't have the scv's in them and they use OBD1 TB/TPS. If you do in fact have a 93 assuming that it is a convertible you would have the weaker cams, not 240/248. The cam combo 240/248 works as an enhancement when removing the butterfly's from the manifold on those OBD1 models. 240/248 came with KA24de's with the scv combination. If that is in fact the case you need a cam upgrade of 240/248, to make the power that the removal of the scv's would do for OBD1's.

How can I tell that if I have butterflies? I know my girlfriends Spec-V has secondary butterflies and you can really hear them when they open up, but I never hear anything like that out of my car.
EDIT: I have a 93 Coupe.

It's still extremely difficult to put your hand back there to feel for it. Another way I determine for the SCV's is that right below the valve cover seem, there are 2 solenoid boxes, that rest against the firewall, (in your pic you can see both of them on the head, next to the valve cover). On OBD2 there is only 1 solenoid box. The solenoids are much easier to feel for than the scv. The solenoid for the SCV should be BROWN in color.
