Some quick tips.

Hey guys, looking through the 240 Forums you guys seem to be some of the more knowledgable. I just picked up a 92 240SX and wanted some quick tips. Timing..where you guys setting it at for decent performance. I threw some Bosch Platinums gapped @ 0.41". Better recommendations? Any other quick tuning tricks with these cars? Things to watch out for?

All answers greatly appreciated.

keep the timing at stock, you won't gain any by advancing it from what I've read

hmm

Talked with a guy in my town that has a 240. He said that bumping it up to 25 BTDC wasn't all that great. He had to use 93 Octane gas and the difference was minimal so he changed it back, although he did say it was a bit quicker throttle response.

Set timing to 23 bdtc and use 93 octane.
Remove mechanical fan, and just use a/c fan.
Remove slack in throttle cable.
Get a $30 OBX warm air intake for a 1998 to 2001 altima from southwestautoworks.com, they might have one for a 240 but mine swapped over fine.
Synthetic Fluids
Clean all grounds and enlarge maf ground wire, or go grounding kit.
All that under $100 and it will wake your car up!

Oh also forgot Z32 fuel filter, reset ECU, new Denso or NGK plugs, Plug wires, Cap and Rotor. and a can of BG 44k or professional fuel inection cleaning wouldn't hurt either.

Yeah you're right get a elec. fan kit but then again that costs money. Although we had quite a lot of plus 90 degree weather with insane amounts of humidity and my car never even blinked once, and all I run is the one fan. I must admit my A.C. is not very effective in gridlock when it is sweltering out.
