Tire choices for S13

My driver side front tire has bad inner wear (thanks to a ball joint with too much ply on the driver side control arm, before I got a new set from PDM) .. I am thinking of changing all 4 tires .. Was thinking of finding out what you guys are running ...

I am running the stock 15" alloys and was looking at going with 205/60R15 instead of the 195's I have right now .. After some browsing I found : Bridgestone RE950 , Falken ZIEX 512 , Yokohama YK420 and DUnlop SP Sport ...

Any Suggestions among these or other high performance/allseason tire would be greatly appreciated ....

Thanks fellas ..

are you wanting to stay with 15's ? if not I would suggest going with yokahama's and switching to 17"s for better handaling.

WOW! Good Choices!!!
Let me pose a question Back at you.. What are you driving on most times..I.E. asphalt, cement, dirt. You know, city streets, rural streets country?
Then look at what weather you want it to handle.
Falkens work well, yet are not top grip on rough/slippery surface. Bridgestone are all around excellent and will push with the Yoko's. The sports are good once they warm up. I run Sumitomo's and they kick butt on most all other tires. Of course they are wearing a bit faster also. I had Yoko AVS db and they were great wear and traction for the price.

dkdeleon:
I wish I could move up from my 15" to 17" and also get rid of some of the ugly fender gap .. .. But I am not very keen of putting that much money into it right now ..Just curious .. Isnt it hard to find a good set of 17" rims with a 4 lug pattern .. 5 lugs would be tooo muuuch ... swapping out hubs and rotors etc etc ... Just had a new set of AGX put on 4 months back ...Still in school ...

Spec240sx :
Most of the drive is gonna be city .. home to school and back .. and ofcourse plenty of highway driving on weekends ... No autox or anything of that sort .... Being in rainy NC, I guess I would need a tire that gives me some decent wet traction as well ...

Pricewise Dunlop Sport appears to be the cheaper.... Yoko 420's and the RE950's run more by about $25 a tire... Falkens appear to be the cheapest by far .... I read reviews that were not so positive about the yok 420's in wet .. Any ideas on that ... I am tempted to go with the Sport cos of price ... You had mentioned it is good when it is warm .. Is it too bad when cold and how does it behave performance wise ... And am i missing out on any other better tires ..

Thanks for all the input guys ...

Keeping at 15's will give you a Big price break in tires. And Yes, 17's will help fill the gap.
Yet it also messes with the ride due to LOW profile. And Low means MORE $$$$$.
So in your case, if you are on a limited $$, your 15's will be great decision. And the RE950's should Be the BEST choice all around.
Have the tire shop throw in lifetime Balance and rotate with the price. They will if you fudge them. keeping up on the tread every 6-7k will make the tires almost double in life. (don't forget, driving habits shorten the life )

Thanks guys .. I will find a quote on RE950 tomorrow .. The lowest price is the one on tire rack @75 bucks a tire .. I am trying to find if the local discount tire store would come to within 10 to 15 bucks of that price , for me to pull it off ..

And as tempting as it is to go with 17", I am gonna have to resist .. I have better uses right now for the 500 bucks that will go towards those rims !!!

dkdeleon :I was tempted to ask you details and price of those rims with tires .. But shipping from Texas to NC would probably ruin the deal for both of us ...

Nissean : I talked to the local discount tire store .. The guy said he doesnt have RE950's , but offered to get them for me .. He got back today evening with a really good price quote ...

Just spending a few more hours making sure that RE950's are the way to go ... And your suggestion helps in that ...

Guys sorry to bother yall again ....

1. RE950
2. Yokohama YK420
3. Dunlop Sport 5000

Pick one for me ... I had almost decided on the bridgestones when dunlop had my mind wavering again ... !!!

And do you think it would be OK to go 205/55/R15 instead of the 60 profile on stock 92 SE rims ... (The asymmetric tread pattern on dunlops is only available on 55 and 50 profile) ...

Thanks guys .. I am definitely changing my tires tomorrow .. So all your inputs will really help ....

Your Speedo will be the only effect from the 55's. And http://www.nismoparts.com/ used to carry, probably still does, a different gear for the correction to the speedo.
