wheel painting

What are some of the steps to good wheel painting. I know if done right it will look good, but what all is done to make it look good? I'm wanting to paint the Z32 wheels.

when I did mine... I used a high grit sand paper... then primer.. and spray... some people put a coat of clear on it to keep them from getting rock chips I guess.
