Crossing over
well first off HI. My name is Don. Im a former GM tech and engineer. i have worked on gm's all my life. i travel a good distance to work these days so a v8 isnt workable for me anymore. and im less then impressed with gm's other car except a gtp that i owned. i want a good gas rwd stick car. well a coworker has a 90 240sx that he will sell to me (my car just got totalled) its $500 for the car (im his boss so he isnt playin with me) it has a bad battery and possibly an altinator. i should be looking at $1700 for my car, plus i rquested the car back cause i have a list of mods on it so i should be able to get $2000 for all the stuff. the 240 needs paint but strait body, and i can paint it. so lets say $300 for that. what mods can i do for extreme power and handling (i know it wont be that much with that amount but im a fabricator so i got an edge) im new to some of the lingo to so a glossary would help lol.

Welcome, if you use the search button and maybe type in somethig like, "mods for s13" or "cheap mods" you might come up with some good info. Or try Google.

89-94 240s are considered S13s, the came in hatchbacks, and coupes. The 89-90 came with SHOC (single over head cam), where as the 91-94 came with DOHC (dual over head cam). 94 was exclusively a convertible...and auto i think. The theres the S14s which are split up into two types. The 95-96 are considered Zenki(s), because of their front end, tail lights, and gauge cluster. 97s-98s are considered Kouki(s) because they have a different front end from the Zenki models. Both are DOHC and all of the cars a RWD with 2.4L Inline four cylinder engines, a.k.a. the longest lasting engine youll find thats a four banger, with the most bang IMO.
I think thats all you really need to know about the models. Well there are the S15s that came with different engines and body style but thats only in Japan and they went from 99-02. Now I know there are variations of the 240s from USDM(U.S. Domestic Make/Model which ever) to JDM(Japan Domestic Make/Model). Just search and youll find 90% of your answers.

yeah 89-94 240's are S13 chassis code, 95-98 are S14, 99+ are S15 (but never sold in US)... there are A LOT of mods you can throw at your car to make it faster (to the point where it's stupid fast) and a lot of the same questions that get asked again and again and again by newcomers... that's why you'll probably get some short answers around here. The search button will be your best friend... the most popular methods for getting the 240 up to speed are to swap out the OEM engine for JDM engines~ lots of choices there... for extreme power, you might want to go with one of the JDM six cylinder engines (RB-Series out of the JDM Nissan Skylines or VG-Series out of the 300zx's) if you're going to stick with 4 cylinders then thats going to have to involve rebuilt internals, there's a few guys around here that have been dropping Chevy LS1 V-8's into the 240, but they're few and far in between. If you're looking for a nice exhaust, check out the Apexi N1 Dual Tip~ a little pricey, but it rumbles like a V8 (no exaggeration). G'luck w/the car 'n' welcome...

All i say if you want some good quick power is get the usual bolt ons, Intake, Headers, Exhaust, and a clutch to transfer the remaining power to the wheels. But you might just wanna find a DOHC and swap that in, i have nothing against SOHC but thats just IMO.

welcome, yeah as far as "cheap mods" are, everyone has their own definition of "cheap" if you wanna keep the SOHC engine, just do your basics, exhaust, intake and maybe a header. if you have a bit more cash to throw around, do the 91-94 KA24DE (DOHC) swap, or if you have even more cash, get the SR20DET (2.0L 4 cyl intercooler turbo Nissan Silvia engine) swap, and just throw a 3" exhaust on it, i have it, love it lol. but all in all, welcome!

i hashed it out with a friend that does tuning. we are gonna look for the dohc engine, but turbo the stock with a couple psi for a start. im used to sc cars and huge 8's so i want to learn a turbo powercurve efore popping a motor. were gonna build the dohc engine up a bit and turbo and swap in. do any of the sr parts transfer over like intakes and such. and where are some good places to buy parts?

good call on the build up on the DOHC, with those engine built up and boosted they are monsters!!! they woudl kill any stock SR. a buddy of mine is thinking of doing one like that
