I'll post up some pics sometime. The event I went to was in LA. At an airforce base near Fontana. It's the only auto-x I have been to. I don't recall my class I was in. It wasn't SM though, because my car is internally modified, and not street legal due to california smog laws... Hence the reason I have it registered ad my Dad's address in Wisconsin. I did the event in March or April of 08. I enjoyed it a lot. Had a lot of fun. The only reason I havn't gotten around to going back is work, deployments, and more work. Navy isn't really a good carreer for the automotive enthusiast.
I didn't even want to go really. I just like having fast cars, and working on them, but my friend talked me into it. I was nervouse. What if I get disqualified? What inspections do I have to go through? What are the requirements? What happens if they put me in a class I can't keep up with? Blah blah blah. I ended up in a solo, so I was on the course myself going through cones, so that was helpful I think. I don't wanna crash my car, so the cones took off a lot of the edge. Go ahead... flame away.

Anyways. I'm gonna look into it a little more before I go back. Not sure I will. Kinda centered on learning to drift now. LOL.

auto-x is only solo. that's how it always is no matter what class it is.

its cool to get into. I love drifting but auto-x and road racing is just as fun. its also a great way to see what mods you need to perform and also once you do mod, how it benefits you.

its also not about modding your car to hell. many guys never ever do well because the mods put them in classes that they simply don't have the skill and experience to place well in.

Also SM, or Street Modified, isn't state-to-state dependent. It's a class within the racing category of SOLO that is determined by the amount of modifications and whether or not the car is considered a street car. You can place yourself in any class you like, if you do too well, you'll be contested and put up in front of an appeals board, if you don't do well, no one will care, LOL!

I ran my Mustang in STS . . .didn't fare too well so no one cared. Conversely, my Miata was setup in D-Prepared simply because it got rained in and I had to remove the carpets.

Seriously, auto-x sounds complicated. I didn't even know it was all solo. Hahaha. Learn something new everyday. I will look into it a little more and see if it really is something I want to get into more. The one and only time I did it was a blast, but the 3 hour drive there and back, hardley seems worth it. Not to mention the miles that would add up quickly.

its really not, you learn a lot as you go, and chat with everybody else there. i know down here in phx all the guys are really cool and willing to teach you anything they know about driving or rules.

and as people said before, ya you class yourself, so if you class wrong no biggie, or ask one of the atuox vet's what class you should be in, and no one will really care until you start winning or going to national tour events. also search around and see if you can find an event closer. i know just in AZ we have four different "regions" that have their own events all the time.

hellz ya autox is a blast, its cheap, you won't wreck your car, and its hella fun

^^ yup.

remember each time before you race... you walk the course and you are provided with a map. NO one knows the course when they arrive.
