Question New guy with a question...

Hi! I'm new here, and new to the 240 as well. I'm from Southern Cali and just discovered the greatness that is the 240. I have been looking to buy a car for a while. I currently drive a '97 Sentra GXE and it's slowly going to pot. So I decided instead of fixing it up or buying a brand new car I would buy a used one and fix it up. I was browsing through all the likely candidates when I came across the 240 sx, and the sun did part the clouds and shine on me. Anyhow, I'm just curious as to what is a reasonable price. I have been looking around at like auto trader, and ebay motors, and things like that but I'm not sure what is a good price and what isn't. I've seen 89's or 91's automatics with more than 100k miles on them going for like $1500 or $2000. I don't mind putting money into the car and I plan on learning mechanics with this car, but I don't really want to end up with a lemon. So, I was wondering what is a good price, and what should I look for when buying one?

(Oh, and I can't drive manual )

I got my '91 for $1500, I've seen s13's going from anywhere from $500 to $3000 depending on year, condition and mileage. Oh and you gotta learn to drive stick sometimes, I learned in my 240 as well as half my friends and my clutch is still damn good. Oh and welcome to the forums

Thanks. Yeah, I really do need to learn to drive stick but no one I know has a car with a manual transmission...lazy family. Anyhow, right now I'm seriously looking at a '97 with about 55k miles on it going for $5,500. Is that too much?

welcome to the boards. pricing will vary by location, condition, and equipment (i.e. modifications, if any). however, i'll do the best i can to give u a generalization based on stock cars (from worst condition to best):

S13
89-90: $500 (or less) to $1800
91-94: $1000 to $3500 (convertibles tend to be at the upper end of the scale

S14
95-96: $4000 to $6500
97-98: $7000 to $10000 (and beyond; these are the most rare as they were made in fewer numbers)

again, that's just a very rough estimate. i've seen them for less than the lowest prices stated (simply because the sellers may have been strapped for cash and had to get rid of them). i've also seen them go for more than the highest numbers quoted for several reasons. anyway, good luck in the search, and i hope this helps.

by the way, once u go manual, u'll pretty much never wanna drive an auto again.

yeah, when i make the switch from manual to auto (my cavalier is an auto... damn non-manual driving ex-wife... ), i find myself about to kick a hole through the floorboard trying to press the clutch when stopping...
