I'm researching that right now. The only that i'm assuming is that the external resevior provides more technical adjustment by allowing adjustments to the compression and rebound separately. I'm assuming that because my dad's sandcar has external reseviors that allows for that adjustability.

^ some coilovers i have seen also have the bound and rebound adjustment that are seperate and do not have the external reservoir.
For the most part its so that the strut does not lose its compression during hard racing.
