Software is freely available for DIYers to alter there stock ecu. Ecu reprogramming can be a diy thing, if you take the time to learn about it. Read up on:

I've made tunes for my sr20det for 550s and z32maf saving about $600, enough to buy 550s and z32maf. In addition I can remove the top speed limiter, "boost cut", and alter the timing/fuel tables for max power.
From JWT you do pay for the knowledge as well as the 2-3 month wait. The parts for a daughterboard and chips is only about $15.
I have a 4 map daughterboard from PLMS development in Australia as well as their consult board and monitoring software.

I program my eproms with a Batronix eprom programmer.

and i knew it was for the knowledge...i mess with electronics all the time... but i have messed up a few things too but thats how i learn... and as far as reading and learning fuel maps or whatever... i m sure thats doable too
