Kevlar Head Gasket

I just found out that I have wholesale access through my father to get sheets of Kevlar paper. I was thinking about making a head gasket out of this material, but I am not sure if the Kevlar will be able to handle the heat over a long period of time. This would be a good application for turbocharged vehicles, exspecially the 240 or those that do not have easy to find metal head gaskets, because it is 4 to 9 times stronger then steel. I would be willing to get the paper and cut exactly like the OEM cork head gasket to try it out, but I don't have a turbo yet. Maybe some of you have researched this alot and could help me out. I would be willing to make these for other people as well and sell them to you guys cheap. But first, answer me will it work properly with some liquid gasket on either side of it?

the thickness of the gasket determines the compression ratio. you should measure the two, stock and the kevlar sheet. and tring to cut the gasket to stock is really hard, not saying that you can but i dont think its worth it. you could you use it for your for your turbo to manifold i hope this helps

well i mean it will be abotu 1mm thick. by cutting to stock specs i mean that i am going to take a stock gasket and a sheet of 1.0mm kevlar to a machine shop and have the holes cut in the kevlar exactly like the stock head gasket.

what is a normal headgasket made out of? i would fear that as temps get higher it could melt.

i dont know but you put black rtv on it. i dont think he can belt that kevlar but you should find out how much heat it is rated at.

Kevlar is rated at high heat. The kevlar I will be recieving is used for high temp. high pressure gaskets I just found out, so it is the right application. It is kevlar with steel gauze. Also the stock head gasket is made of carbon treated cork and steel gauze, it can handle a little above stock heat but not pressure, it is relatively thin and can rip easily, Kevlar is about 15 times stronger then stock gaskets pressure wise but the only thing I am slightly concerned about is the temps. I guess i will give it a try and have a stock head gasket to replace it if it blows. But since Dupont says that this specific Kevlar is made for the high temp and high pressure engine gaskets, i think it will be more then perfect.

This sounds very interesting. Be sure to keep us updated on this. I'm trying to plan out a turbo ka24de project right now and building up the engine internals is something I will be doing so replacing the stock KA head gasket is another thing I'll need to do.
