Check the tranny fluid.

Obviously you are burning something.

Also check under the trim panels for shorted wires and such.

check to make sure you stubbed out your cigarette or you emptied the pot out of your bowl. that stuff is bad for you. also doing burnouts could cause this.

sorry just f#@king w/ ya. do you hear any funny noises when you drive. I would say that is kinda an unusual problem. maybe something tranny related. you could do a fluid flush to see if it helps. as far as the turbo goes you will need something big for that kind of power. if you haven't bought the motor yet you could get an rb25 for descent money and get close to that number on a stock turbo or slight upgrade. when you upgrade you quite often will need a different manifold as well depending on which turbo you choose. i was planning on going with an s15 ball bearing t-28 which is only a slight upgrade from a stock s13 turbo, but good power in the 300 range and almost no turbo lag. my eclipse uses a bigger turbo, but lag sux on the street. keep that in mind.

Could be your rear main seal is leaking and is burning up the tranny fluid on you. That could be causing smoke to be billowing out of your shifter, since the block and tranny meet up right around there. Do you know what the various fluids smell like? If it smells like tranny fluid it may be that.

For your HP figures, you could look into a straight T4 type turbo from Garret, which would be pretty cost effective. Or you could get my dream turbo, an HKS 3037S, and call it a day.
