hey guys,
Do you really need to let your car idle after you drive it for 5 mins? I herd some guys say that the oil will get baked in the turbo if you don't let it idle. How ever My dads power stroke desile runs high boost and he never lets it idle after driving it. he has never had any turbo problems (the trucks got about 180,000km's on it). So I would just like to know what your thoughts are on turbo timmers. Should I buy one or spend the money else were.
Thanks...josh

diesel is different. the engine runs at a cooler temp. yes the oil will get scorched to say in a gasoline engine with higher boost temps. yes it is necessary to prolong the life of your turbo. it just allows some of the heat to go away quickly and saves the oil from degrading.
YES!!!
YES!!!
I wouldn't say that you need to do it after 5 minutes of driving. If you are running hard or even after some highway driving, just don't go into boost for a couple of minutes before you park. Even then maybe 30-45 seconds tops should be more than enough time. I just recently got my turbo timer and I think of it more as bling than anything else. Before I would just wait in the car and by the time I finished putting The Club on my steering wheel and wedging my butt from my Bride seat it was good to go.

Sure - some people will say, "but when you're moving there's cooling air going through the radiator, etc." and I'll say "sure, I know there is) but even if slower driving and air cooling at movement was enough to cool an engine (let alone a turbocharged one), unless you have an external oil cooler, than slow driving right before you park a turbocharged car does nothing for cooling the oil.
IMO the turbo timer is more of a convenience (you don't have to babysit) but, on the same token IMO you should always cool allow enough time to cool everything down once you're stationary.
