need help on removing stock radio

just purchased a 93 convert, radio shot, bought another stock to replace. Cannot find the right combo to remove radio. Does the console encompassing the shifter etc have to come out? Any advice will be appreciated.

Ok, the very first thing that you have to do is get the stock shifter **** off. You should be able to just twist it off. Hope you don't have my luck and you dont have to grind it off with a dremel.

Anyway, after you have removed the shift **** you should be able to pull off the console that is surronding the shifter. A easy way to do it is to use two flat head screwdrivers and pry your way around it. If I remember correctly there are 8 spring clips holding it in place. Four in the base around the shifter, two in the middle where it starts to curve, and two at the top right and left. I recommend starting from the bottom.

After you have this piece off you should see the screws that are holding the radio and it's harness in place. Undo these screws and you'll notice that the metal holding onto the head unit will unscrew. Take the four screws out to get the two sides of the holder off the old head unit.

Then attach the two sides of the bracket using the 4 screws and reverse the process from there. I recommend starting from the bottom again to get the console panel in, but however you feel comfortable snaping it back in place is fine.

Good luck!!

thanks for the quick reply, mine is an automatic, does that change anything about your answer? As I understand you, the plastic surrounding the gear shift has to come off before removing the other plastic containing the radio, right? thanks again. carl

hmmmm...... I'm not sure about the automatic, but i'm almost positive that it's the same general steps. But yeah you have to get the console panel to pop off before you can undo the harness that's holding in the radio. My best advice is if you have a Chiltons guide for a 240sx, grab it and see what it says. I'll look in mine later tonight and see if I can figure out anything from it for you if you don't have one.

the auto:
put on the parking break
put it into neutral or as far back as it needs to go.
remove ash tray
reach hand in and push up on that 8-clip console previously mensioned, after it's loose you'll have to turn it sideways to get it over the top of the shifter. after that it's just like the other one.
And after you've put it back into park, you might want to rock the car back & forth till you hear the trans 'click' back into place.
It takes me maybe 5 minutes to do the whole thing, it's alot simpler than it sounds
